Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful

Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful We are an environmental charity dedicated to making Northern Ireland a cleaner and more pleasant place in which to live

Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful is an environmental charity and not a private 'with profits' organisation. Much emphasis is given to our ethical approach, particularly working in partnership and collaboration, achieving success through progressive human resource policies and our impact as an organisation on the environment. We are part funded by the Department for the Environment, the rest of our

funding is generated by private partnerships (such as with Translink) or via selling our products to councils and other large landowners.

The Connecting Communities Roadshow continues, this time...Belfast ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿค

We had another really special evening in at Girdwood Community Hub with Belfast City Council.

We loved meeting so many members of the volunteering community, people wanting to make a difference and love where they live, and getting to show off what we can do to support them.๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒป

Last week we gathered at Belfast Harbour Office to launch our new five-year strategy.๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒป

To open the event we welcomed keynote speaker Ruairi Brogan, Senior Policy Officer for RSPB Northern Ireland and 30 Under 30 alumnus, who highlighted the environmental challenges and opportunities that will shape the years ahead.

As well as looking to the future, we took time to celebrate the people and projects already making a difference where we live. We heard inspiring stories from Deidre Shannon of Higher Ground from Dromore Co. Down, a volunteer gardening group supported through our community engagement work, whose reach and impact is improving their local spaces for people and nature. ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŒผ

We were treated to a presentation on tackling fast fashion from St. Catherineโ€™s College Eco-Committee, now an award-winning ECO-UNESCO group and Eco-School, championing environmental action among their students.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’š

A huge thank you to our incredible speakers and to Belfast Harbour for generously hosting us as we take this important next step together.

Our new strategy sets out an ambitious vision for the next five years of supporting people, places, and communities to do more to love where they live.

What does it mean to be an award-winning beach in Northern Ireland?๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Today, we presented the Beach and Marina Awards, including the internationally recognised Blue Flag, a symbol of excellence, not just in water quality but also in environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria at coastal spaces. Once you know what it means youโ€™ll start to spot the iconic blue flag wherever you go, all around the world. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

We also presented the Seaside Awards, this accolade celebrates sites showing commitment to the sustainable development of beaches through compliance with high standards of water quality, environmental management, and safety. ๐ŸŒŠ

This year we awarded 21 Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, meaning, the next time you go to the seaside, you can be sure you are going to have a great time at a place managed with pride by a dedicated team. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ†

Head to Live Here Love Here to find your nearest award-winning beach.

Thank you to this year's generous supporters, Ards and North Down Borough Council, for hosting our ceremony at The Stables in Groomsport, DAERA Minister Andrew Muir for opening the awards, and Robert Walsh from Northern Ireland Marine Task Force for sharing his thoughts on the importance of clean and safe coastal areas.

Congratulations to all of the winning operators of this year's awards, Ards and North Down Borough Council, Belfast Harbour, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Mid Ulster District Council and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council!

๐Ÿ†• Research highlights that our shores are still awash with discarded waste.

New research from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful has found no progress from last year on marine litter, as many of the same indicators remain at alarmingly high levels.

85% of the litter found on Northern Irelandโ€™s beaches is made from plastic, representing a marginal increase from last year.

Eric Randall, Chief Executive of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, said:

โ€œThis report highlights that our marine litter problem is still very much with us. It is growing in some areas and stagnating in others. We can do so much better, and with the right policies in place, I know we can achieve better.

We need the environment to be a prominent issue. This report highlights why change cannot wait, and we all need to step up the progress in our fight against litter. Building a circular economy and reducing our waste are keys to success in this area. My hope is that the findings in this report encourage policymakers and the public to value and protect our marine areas better for future generations.โ€

You never know what the tide will bring!๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿšฎ
Our team were surveying Ardglass beach as part of the Marine Litter programme and came across a few interesting finds. No.2 looks like part of an old wooden slipway.๐Ÿง

What's the most unusual thing you have found on a litter-pick? Let us know in the comments.๐Ÿ‘‡

It was another busy and inspiring day for the 30 Under 30 Northern Ireland Climate Change-Makers, hosted at Ulster Universityโ€™s new Belfast campus. The day began with eye-opening talks from leading academics, exploring sustainability across economics, IT and fashion.๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‘

This yearโ€™s cohort then had their first opportunity to present their Group Impact Projects, sharing their ideas for a greener more sustainable Northern Ireland and receiving feedback from the panel of industry specialists. From tackling food insecurity to encouraging public action on water quality, they brought forward innovative, thought-provoking solutions.๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿฅ•

๐ŸฆWe wrapped up with a workshop led by Connor McKinney from Wild Belfast, focusing on the connectivity of the challenges we face and the need for joined-up thinking to create meaningful change.

Thank you to Ulster University for hosting us at their Belfast Campus.
The 30 Under 30 programme is delivered by Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful and Podiem and is supported by Garfield Weston Foundation, with additional support from Ulster University, Belfast City Council, Danske Bank UK, Pinsent Masons LLP, Share Energy, Arup, and LFT Charitable Trust.
