Join us for our first swabathon and make a life-saving difference! Sign up to the stem cell register with Marrow at Queen’s Belfast - a simple cheek swab could help find a match for someone in need of a stem cell transplant.

Visit us at Queen’s SU, McClay Library, or BT9 accommodation on Tuesday, 25th March, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Your registration could be the first step in giving someone a second chance at life!

Together we can give the gift of life this Ramadan

Last year we worked with an inspirational father, Mosan Hussain, after his little boy Eesa was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia aged just five years old and his family were told he needed a stem cell transplant to save his life. When someone needs a stem cell transplant, they are more likely to find a matching donor from someone who shares their ethnicity, so Mosan and his wider family network worked tirelessly to raise awareness in South Asian and Muslim communities and organised recruitment events that saw an amazing 1,500 people sign up to the register.

A donor was eventually found and Eesa is now a happy, healthy little boy recovering well after his transplant. But his family remains committed to recruiting more donors from minority ethnic backgrounds to the register, so every person in need of a stem cell transplant can find their lifesaving match just like Eesa did.

“In the Quran it says saving one life is as if you have saved the whole of humanity.”

– Mosan, Eesa’s Dad

🚨 Rumour Patrol in action! 🚨

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about stem cell donation, but we’re here to set the record straight. This post tackles some of the biggest misconceptions, so you can feel confident about what donation really involves.

Huge thanks to Erryn Killiner for compiling some of these back in 2021!

Our Story

We’re Belfast Marrow, a group of Queen’s University students who work with Anthony Nolan to help save the lives of people with blood cancer and blood disorders.

We’re one of over 50 Marrow groups at universities across the UK. We run donor recruitment events on campus and across Northern Ireland, to give 16-30 year olds the opportunity to join the lifesaving stem cell register. On average, 1 in 100 of the students we sign up will be matched to a patient one day, and will go on to donate stem cells to potentially save a stranger’s life. It costs £60 to add each individual to the stem cell register, so fundraising is also an important part of what we do.

We’re a friendly and inclusive group of volunteers, and we’re always happy to welcome new volunteers at any of our events.

If you have any questions, or if you’d like to get involved, just send us an email at [email protected] - we’d love to hear from you!
