Check out our map of the best spots to see these iconic little nutkins, from our nature reserves in Glenarm and Straidkilly, Co. Antrim, to local woodlands across NI. Early mornings and mid-afternoons (before their nap!) are the best times to catch them in action 🌳💚🌰

Forget the Derry Girls – meet the Derry Squirrels! ❤️

These fantastic clips were shared with us by volunteers from North West Red Squirrel Group and Binevenagh Red Squirrels Group, who are working hard to monitor and protect red squirrels across the county.

The distribution of red and grey squirrels across the county has changed in recent years, and the work of local volunteers is helping us build a better picture of where they are now.

But there are gaps in our knowledge and that’s where you come in.

Nature in your pocket?

The Bank of England has today revealed the wildlife chosen to feature on future banknotes, and we're thrilled that nature is taking centre stage

After nearly half a million votes, the winners are:

🪽 Barn owl
🦔 European hedgehog
🐝 Buff-tailed bumblebee
🌊 Atlantic puffin

Our Senior Conservation Officer Katy Bell was delighted to contribute to the Bank's work exploring wildlife for future banknotes.

The chosen species celebrate our incredible biodiversity while helping shine a light on the challenges nature faces. We hope they'll inspire more people to value and protect wildlife for generations to come.

There’s still time to have your say on bTB and badgers.

DAERA’s consultation on wildlife intervention options closes at 5pm on 9 October.

Ulster Wildlife is calling for:
🦡 A non-lethal approach - no selective badger culling
💉 Badger vaccination as the preferred wildlife intervention approach
🐄 Stronger cattle testing, movement controls and farm biosecurity
🔬 Evidence-led decision-making and independent oversight

The mid-week leaderboard is here! 🐿️🏆

We’re just three days into and County Derry/L’Derry has shot to the top of the leaderboard!

We’ve already seen a 250% increase in sightings from County Derry/L’Derry compared with the whole of 2025. That’s really encouraging to see, and a fantastic sign that people are getting involved and helping us fill important gaps in our knowledge - thank you!

But there’s still time to shake things up!
