We support the Children’s Cancer Unit in the RBHSC by providing vital resources, staff and specialised care, equipment and infrastructure.

We fund research and offer a range of family support services to those facing a childhood cancer diagnosis.

🎒📚For most children and young people, this week marks the end of summer holidays and a return to school. Catchups with friends, shiny new uniforms, a new classroom and exciting new lessons to learn.

But for a child going through treatment for cancer or a complex blood disorder, things will look a bit different this week. Most of them will stay at home or in the hospital and miss out on the back-to-school buzz that most of us take for granted.

That's where our Robotics Programme comes in.🤖

Through the use of telepresence robots, we are enabling children to get back into the classroom and stay connected with their schoolwork and, more importantly, their friends.🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Today we're sharing Dylan's story and how his robot was a lifeline for keeping in touch with his friends and school community.

It's time for our ✨End of the Week Thank-yous ✨ and we've got a fantastic group of fundraisers to thank this week!

🎗️A very big thank you to Blair Memorial Flute Band who recently organised a collection in Omagh which raised a fantastic £1️⃣,2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ for the Children's Cancer Unit. Handing over the cheque on the band's behalf were Jessica and her dad William.🙏

🎗️Huge thanks to the team from NILGOSC who have raised an incredible £3️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣during the last year through their charity parnership with us. Together, their staff have organised two marathon relay teams, a soup kitchen, Bottle Bag Roulette, a toy drive and a coffee morning, as well as volunteering at our family Christmas party at the MAC last year.🙏

As always, all the money raised through donations goes directly to help the children receiving treatment in the Children's Cancer Unit and their families and medical teams.

📣Are you or your child aged 13–25 and have experience of cancer care?

The Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service is looking for passionate young people to join the AYA Cancer User Forum to help shape the future of services for adolescents and young adults across Northern Ireland.

As a forum member, you'll have the opportunity to share your experiences, influence service improvements, review resources, and work alongside healthcare professionals to ensure young people's voices are heard. Whether you're currently receiving treatment, in follow-up care, or have completed treatment, your insights can help make a real difference to the care and support provided to others.

The forum meets approximately four times a year, with options to participate online or in person. It is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where every voice matters.

It's time for our ✨End of the Week Thank-yous ✨ and this week we're sharing a fundraiser with a very special connection to the Children's Cancer Unit.

Leo O'Kane was a much-loved face within the Unit who always made time for the children and young people, and their families as he carried out his work. Leo sadly passed away earlier this year and is missed by all who knew him. We are so grateful to his family who recently organised a memorial night in The West in his honour, raising an incredible £3️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣for our charity.

Leo's wife Briege, son Conor, daughters Niamh and Áine, and grandsons Cillian and Fionn visited the Children's Cancer Unit this week to present the cheque to the hospital staff including Leo's Domestic colleagues and staff from Clinic.

Huge thanks to Leo's family, friends and all who donated in his memory.🙏

Chris was loving dad to Ellie, our Play Specialist in the Unit and it was lovely to see Ellie this week to accept the cheque on our behalf for £4️⃣5️⃣0️⃣.🙏

🎗️A really big thank you to a very special boy, Zac Fletcher, who has been busy in his local community helping to raise an incredible amount of money to give back to all the charities who supported him and his family during his treatment last year. TODAY IS WORLD FRIENDSHIP DAY 🧑‍🤝‍🧑🩵

Friendship can blossom in the most unexpected places.

For a child or young person facing cancer, the journey is filled with uncertainty for the whole family. Long days and extended stays in hospital can take their toll, but sometimes, even in the darkest moments, a silver lining shines through in the special friendships and bonds formed within the walls of the Children's Cancer Unit.

Whether it's a child meeting another young person who truly understands what they're going through, or a parent finding comfort in the kindness of another mum or dad who simply gets it, those connections are so special. They bring comfort, laughter and strength, often lasting long after treatment has ended.🫂

Today, on World Friendship Day, we're celebrating those wonderful friendships. While no family would ever choose this journey, the relationships built along the way are a reminder that no one has to face it alone.

We always love hearing stories of the friendships that have grown through the Unit. 💛

💉🩺 We are delighted to have provided some new interactive medical play equipment for the Play and Psychology teams in the Children's Cancer Unit.

This fantastic equipment will be used to prepare children for medical procedures and familiarise them with the various pieces of equipment and terminology they are likely to encounter during a hospital stay or visit. It includes pieces like an ECG machine, chemo and feeding bags, IV infusion stands and a thumb prick kit. And even better, it comes complete with lots of sparkles and colourful parts to make it even more fun!✨🌈

Research shows that most medical anxiety and distress in children comes from fear of the unknown and using toys and play-based preparation is proven to empower children and their families and reduce fear and uncertainty.

These toys will help to turn medical experiences into interactive and playful adventures, putting the child at the centre of their own treatment plans and ensuring they feel fully prepared for what is to come.

It was great to see the toys in action when Mohamed came in to visit and we’re looking forward to hearing how the children get on with the new equipment during their appointments.🧸🏥
