🎈🧸As Play in Healthcare Week continues, we’re sharing one of the many ways we support play in the Children’s Cancer Unit.

For a child or young person, receiving a cancer or complex blood disorder diagnosis can be incredibly scary and it can bring about a lot of uncertainty, unpleasant procedures and treatments and a big change to the normal life that they knew. This can leave a child feeling scared, confused and not in control.

This is where our My Special Aflac Ducks come in🪿

Through our longstanding partnership with Aflac Northern Ireland, we have been able to provide My Special Aflac Ducks to children receiving treatment in the Children’s Cancer Unit. The soft, fluffy ducks provide a soothing companion to help children prepare for medical procedures, communicate their feelings, practise distraction techniques and so much more.

Some of the really clever features of the My Special Aflac Ducks include:

🪿An accompanying medical bag which includes medical play equipment such as a port-a-cath, stethoscope, pulse oximeter, syringe and bandages.

🪿Feelings/emotions coins which can be held against the duck’s chest to help the child communicate how they are feeling in the moment.

🪿A special Soundscapes™ app which allows the children to listen to the sounds of a forest, ocean, farm or amusement park - perfect for practising distraction therapy.

It's time for our ✨End of the Week Thank-yous ✨ and we've got some great fundraisers to thank this week!

🎗️A huge thank you to the pupils, staff and entire school community from Drumachose Primary School in Limavady who have raised an amazing £1️⃣,5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ for the Children's Cancer Unit in memory of little Joshua Wallace.🙏

🎗️Massive thanks to Paul Thompson and Jane for organising a recent golf day at Lisburn Golf Club as part of their ongoing fundraising efforts for the charity under Project DT. The golf day has raised an incredible £2️⃣5️⃣,7️⃣0️⃣1️⃣. A big thank you to Lisburn Golf Club for their support and a special thanks to Martin Symington from Pure Roast Coffee for sponsoring the event. Thanks also to all those who sponsored a hole , donated a prize, bought a raffle ticket or helped in any way. What a fantastic total!🙏

🎗️Thanks so much to Sean Fitzpatrick who recently ran the Belfast Half Marathon and raised an amazing £1️⃣,4️⃣7️⃣7️⃣ to support children and young people living with cancer. Super fundraising and well done on completing the run!🙏

We were delighted to attend the annual CAYAS Conference in Dublin last weekend. 💛

Bringing together healthcare professionals, researchers, young people, families, survivors and organisations from across Ireland and beyond, the conference was a wonderful opportunity to share knowledge, experiences and ideas about supporting children, adolescents and young adults affected by cancer.

This year was particularly special for us as we were there to support Aileen O’Dwyer, whose PhD research is being funded by The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity.

Aileen’s research is exploring the psychosocial needs of adolescents and young adults living with cancer across the island of Ireland - helping to build a better understanding of the challenges young people face throughout their cancer journey.

It was fantastic to see Aileen present her work and to be part of an event bringing so many people together with a shared commitment to improving cancer care and support for young people. 🌟

🎈 Celebrating Play in Healthcare Week! 🎈

This week, we’re celebrating the incredible impact of Play in the Children’s Cancer Unit and recognising the fantastic Play Team, Ellie, Michelle and Jennifer, who make such a difference to children and young people going through cancer treatment. 💛

We are very proud to work so closely with the Play Team and to support their work. From providing toys, games, sensory equipment, decorations and resources, to working together on events and initiatives, we see every day just how important play is during a child or young person’s cancer journey.

Play can:

✨ Help children understand their illness and treatment.

✨ Provide distraction and comfort during procedures and investigations.

✨ Help reduce anxiety, distress, boredom and isolation.

✨ Give children the chance to be children- to have fun, be creative and maintain a sense of normality.

✨Support development and social skills at a time when so much of everyday life has been disrupted.

We love working alongside Ellie, Michelle and Jennifer and supporting the wonderful initiatives they bring to the Unit. We are also very grateful for the help and support they provide to us as a charity, from Pizza Tuesday orders to supporting the events we run in the hospital and advising on equipment and supplies for the Unit.

We are especially proud to fund the Ellie’s role, helping to ensure that the Play service is available 7 days a week. We know that weekends can be particularly long for children and families on the ward, when the Unit is quieter and there are fewer activities taking place. Thanks to this support, play doesn’t have to stop on a Friday. 💛

Play isn’t just something to do. During childhood cancer treatment, play can be a vital part of care. 🎈💛

Today marks the final day of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. 💛

Throughout September, our campaign has shone a light on the incredible team behind the care provided in the Children’s Cancer Unit.

From specialist nurses and dietitians to social workers, doctors and many more, every member of the team plays a vital role in supporting children, young people and their families throughout their treatment journey.

While September may be coming to an end, our support for this incredible team doesn’t stop. We’re committed to continuing to fund essential roles, helping to ensure that children and families receive the specialist care and support they need.

It's time for our ✨End of the Week Thank-yous ✨ and we've got some great fundraisers to thank this week!

🎗️Huge thanks to Rev. Jason Kernohan and the congregation at All Saints’ Eglantine, Culcavey for holding a recent lunch at Eglantine Church Hall to support the Children’s Cancer Unit through 'Project DT'. A special word of thanks to Jane McCambley and the other ladies for organising the event and to everyone who came along and made a donation. We were thrilled to receive a fantastic £1️⃣,5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣was raised, unbelievable support from all involved 🙏

🎗️Massive thank you to the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service who recently held a car wash day in Cookstown to raise money for the Children's Cancer Unit. The event was really well attended and Sinead was delighted to attend NIFRS' recent graduation ceremony and accept a cheque for an incredible £2️⃣,3️⃣8️⃣0️⃣. Thanks to all who donated and all those who organised the event.🙏
