Welcome David Atkinson!

We are delighted to welcome David to our Board of Trustees.

David brings a particularly strong blend of leadership, governance, inclusion and community engagement experience. With more than 36 years' service within Lloyds Banking Group, including over 20 years in senior leadership roles, his strategic insight and leadership experience will be a valuable asset to the Foundation as we continue to strengthen our support for charities and communities across Northern Ireland.

Alongside his professional achievements, David is a passionate advocate for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, championing inclusion initiatives across Northern Ireland and England. He has also supported numerous charities and community organisations through mentoring, partnership development and volunteering.

David's commitment to delivering tangible social impact, together with his extensive leadership and governance expertise, makes him an excellent addition to our Board.

Today is World Mental Health Day 💚 A reminder that mental health is something we all have, and that struggling at times is part of being human.

For lots of families, the hardest part of getting support is walking through the door. That’s why Lightwork NI set out to create somewhere that feels nothing like a clinic: a warm, homely space where children and families can settle, be themselves and feel safe enough to talk.

Our grant helped Lightwork refurbish their new premises and will support their rent for the year ahead. Families have noticed the difference. In a recent evaluation, 100 families scored the welcoming, homely feel of the service an average of 9.98 out of 10.

Every organisation has to start somewhere. IGNITE, our seeding grant programme, helps newly established charities take their first steps with grants of up to £2,000 alongside mentoring and training support.

Wee Chicks provides 75 North Belfast families with a welcoming, trusted place where their children are known and cared for. Our £2,000 IGNITE grant helped cover essential costs, including website, phone and compliance, enabling the charity to keep showing up for families every day.

On Friday nights in Coleraine, and into the small hours of the weekend in Portrush and Portstewart, Coleraine Street Pastors are a familiar and reassuring presence. Made up of 41 volunteers drawn from 18 local churches, the organisation supports anyone who is vulnerable, distressed, disorientated or simply in need of a calm and caring face in a difficult moment.

Our Community FLEX grant helped fund the administration support that keeps their volunteer teams trained and ready.

Alongside training, the funding ensured teams were properly equipped on patrol: uniforms, first aid kits, torches, foil blankets and bottled water, restocked and checked week on week.

As we approach the end of National Inclusion Week, we're reflecting on the work of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce established over the past year to help embed inclusion as a strategic priority across the Foundation.

The Taskforce's focus has included reviewing how we promote diversity and lived experience within our own governance, strengthening our approach to Trustee recruitment, developing better ways to understand the communities ultimately benefiting from the organisations we fund, and embedding inclusive practice across our policies, communications and culture.

We've also been engaging external partners and specialists to challenge our thinking as part of our ongoing commitment to this important work. Thank you to our staff, Trustees, sector partners and funded organisations for continuing to be part of this journey

As part of National Inclusion Week, we're reflecting on the work we've been doing to strengthen equality, diversity and inclusion, both across our own organisation and in the way we support communities across Northern Ireland.

Inclusion starts with access. That's why we've recently expanded Everway’s accessibility tool, ReachDeck, beyond our website to cover all of our application and evaluation forms too.

For some people, barriers to engaging with information come from visual impairment, dyslexia, neurodiversity, literacy challenges or English not being a first language. Whether you're applying for funding, completing a monitoring report or taking part in an evaluation, ReachDeck is now there throughout helping make sure those barriers don't stand between people and the support available.

It's a small change with a real impact, and one more step towards our ambition to be a Foundation that's genuinely easy to engage with, for everyone.
