Congratulations to Professor Nichola Rooney who will be conferred 'Doctor of Science for distinction in science' during our Summer Graduations. Nichola is amongst eleven honorary graduates being recognised for outstanding contributions to society 🎓

What is trauma?

We often think about it as an individual experience, but trauma can also be shaped by social and political contexts, affecting communities as well as the people within them.

In this latest episode of MQ Open Mind, Prof Rory O’Connor is joined by Prof Orla Muldoon, Head of Department and Professor of Psychology at Queen’s University Belfast. Her research explores the links between identity, conflict, and trauma, and how the environments we live in shape our psychological experiences.

Together, they explore what makes social trauma distinct, how it can ripple through communities as well as individuals, and what the latest research is revealing about its long-term impacts.

Orla also shares why recognising the social dimensions of trauma is so important for shaping better research, policy, and support.

"I’m a second-year psychology student with a particular interest in child psychology and development, alongside neurodiversity, including areas such as dyslexia. I have taken part in many research studies as a participant, which has given me practical insight into how equipment is operated and how to conduct psychological research. Outside of my studies, I enjoy travelling to experience different cultures and engage with a diverse range of people, which continues to shape my interest in how individuals think, learn, and develop.
