Volunteer Week - The heart of our organisation. 💜

Behind every event, community group, fundraiser, awareness campaign, and service, there's a volunteer helping make it happen.

Our volunteers bring their time, skills, experiences, and compassion to The Rainbow Project every single week. Some help out at events, some support programmes, some share their expertise, and others simply show up when they're needed most.

The contribution each person makes helps strengthen our community and makes a real difference to LGBTQIA+ people and their families across Northern Ireland.

As part of Volunteer Week, we want to say a sincere thank you to everyone who gives their time to support our work. We couldn't do it without you.

Volunteer Week begins today! 💜

This week, we're celebrating the incredible volunteers who give their time, energy and skills to support The Rainbow Project and the communities we serve.

From supporting events and community programmes to helping us create welcoming spaces across our services, our volunteers play a vital role in everything we do. Their dedication, compassion and commitment help make Northern Ireland a better place for LGBTQIA+ people and their families.

To every volunteer who has supported us throughout the year, thank you.

We couldn't do it without you. 🌈

The Rainbow Project is seeking to recruit up to four trustees,

Who are a resident in Northern Ireland, and committed to our mission statement of, “Working for a better Northern Ireland for LGBTQIA+ people and their families".

You’ll help change lives and change society, playing a key part in taking forward our current strategy, renewing our strategy from 2028 and continuing to increase our already award-winning impact with service users and communities at the heart of what we do.

We welcome applications from passionate and motivated individuals with a variety of skills and experience. We are particularly interested in applications from:

■ Racialised people

■ Trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people;

■ People based outside the Belfast area

As these groups are currently underrepresented on our Board.

Closing: 1st June 2026

Interviews: Week commencing 22nd June 2026 and will be facilitated on Microsoft Teams.

A Death Café is a confidential and safe space where people, often strangers, gather to drink tea/ coffee, have a sweet treat and discuss death, dying and bereavement.
It involves a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes, as opposed to a grief support or counselling session.

Death, dying and bereavement are a part of life, but this is often a taboo subject and can be difficult to talk about.
Death Cafés offer connection, friendship, friendship, kinship. We know from our previous cafe’s that there are things that come up for LGBTQIA+ folks in a safe space around end of life care, complex grief, funerals, partners, family…we are here to share and to listen.

Everyone LGBTQIA+ is welcome to attend, regardless of your experiences with death, dying and bereavement. You might be curious about the topic, or just want a dedicated space to discuss it.

This event will be externally facilitated by Patricia Lübeck, Birth and Death Doula. It is hosted by the Cancer Champions, a partnership pilot project between The Rainbow Project and Macmillan Cancer Support.

It will be held in Paperxclips Books on 28th November 2025, 6-8pm.

We know that a lot of trans people in Northern Ireland will have questions about the EHRC's new Code of Practice, and how it might impact you.

The short answer is, the EHRC's remit only covers England, Scotland, and Wales, so this shouldn't have an impact. The long answer is more complicated, so we try to break it down here.

We're taking our time to work through the Code and figure out its implications for trans people, and will seek to support our colleagues in Great Britain as they work through this new development.

A huge thank you to every single person and team who chose to run the Belfast City Marathon for The Rainbow Project 💛

Not only did you take on the training and the challenge itself, but you’ve also put so much effort into fundraising along the way, and together you’ve already raised an incredible £6.5k, with more donations still coming in.

We’re honestly so grateful for the support, generosity and community spirit shown by everyone involved. If you know someone who ran for Rainbow, there’s still time to sponsor them and show your support.

Thank you all again!

We couldn’t do this without you 🌈

Today is IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.

While there has been progress, LGBTQIA+ people here in Northern Ireland are still facing discrimination, hate crime and harmful practices every day.

Right now, transphobic hate crime still is not properly covered under NI hate crime legislation, and conversion practices remain legal across the UK.

We have worked hard alongside communities, campaigners and partners to push for change, including reaching the drafting stage with Eoin Tennyson's conversion practices private member's bill - if approved, this may reach the assembly this year

We also worked hard to get transphobic hate crime included in the sentencing bill - but this was removed due to disagreements in the executive.

Now we need political leaders to step up.

We are encouraging people to contact their MLAs and ask them to support meaningful protections for LGBTQIA+ people here in Northern Ireland.

Because everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and able to live openly as themselves.
