Our scholarships programme for 2026 will close for applications next Monday, 19th October.

Sarah, last year’s winner of the Pamela Lutton Scholarship, has kindly shared with us the difference her scholarship award has made for her own career development, and how it has helped local people affected by cancer.

Applications are welcome from staff working in oncology or haematology services in the Belfast Trust or at the North West Cancer Centre.

• Dr Gary McGowan Scholarship – open to oncology trainees in the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre.
• Pamela Lutton Scholarship – open to therapy radiographers in the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre.
• Pearl Ewing Scholarship – open to all staff across cancer and haematology services in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.
• Dr Seamus McAleer Scholarship – open to therapy radiographers at the North West Cancer Centre, Altnagelvin.
• Professor David Stewart Scholarship – open to all oncology staff at the North West Cancer Centre, Altnagelvin.

Each scholarship has an award of up to £3,000 and can be used towards a training or educational course, and any related travel.

Today is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day and we caught up with Gemma, our Secondary Breast Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, to talk about the signs and symptoms to be aware of after a breast cancer diagnosis. Being aware of the signs and symptoms of secondary (metastatic) breast cancer and being informed about any new or ongoing changes, can help people feel empowered to seek advice and support when needed.

✨Gemma is the only nurse of her kind in Northern Ireland, dedicated to supporting people living with metastatic breast cancer and the people who matter most to them. She provides specialist care for patients diagnosed and treated within the Belfast Trust.

Are you aged 13–25 and have experience of cancer care? The Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Service are looking for passionate young people to join the AYA Cancer User Forum and help shape the future of services for adolescents and young adults across Northern Ireland.

As a forum member, you'll have the opportunity to share your experiences, influence service improvements, review resources, and work alongside healthcare professionals to ensure young people's voices are heard. Whether you're currently receiving treatment, in follow-up care, or have completed treatment, your insights can help make a real difference to the care and support provided to others.

The forum meets approximately four times a year, with options to participate online or in person. The forum is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where every voice matters.

“Laura has been a real rock for me. I have watched her with other patients, and anyone coming into Bridgewater Suite who is vulnerable, uncomfortable or anxious, she moves quickly to reassure, just as she has done for me.

This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we are sharing how the work of our staff is making a difference to people across Northern Ireland. People like Deric Henderson, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia, acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL), last year. Deric has been supported by our Advanced Nurse Practitioner for Haematology, Laura.

We are proud to be able to support a team of specialist staff who care for those affected by blood cancers including Laura, and our Clinical Nurse Specialists Andrea and Corinne, who care for those affected by lymphoma and leukaemia.
