To mark Men’s Health Week, we are shining a spotlight on just some of our funded staff who help care for men impacted by cancer.

As well as caring for those with bladder and renal cancer, our urology specialist nurses also care for men impacted by testicular and prostate cancer. In the last year, this team cared for 485 people, carrying out over 5,600 consultations with their patients. They provide support from diagnosis, during treatment, and through ongoing reviews at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre, providing care for patients from both the Belfast and Southern Health and Social Care Trusts.

For our In Focus series for June, we caught up with one of this vital team, Shelley, to find out more about their roles and the impact your donations have through our specialist nursing team 💛

👏 Nurseries, schools, colleges and universities – thank you! 👏

Together you have raised a fantastic £20,292.31 over the last academic year, making a real and meaningful difference to cancer patients and their families across Northern Ireland.

💛 Your donation could help to provide over 811 nursing hours from our team of specialist nurses, who provide patients with vital care and support when they need it most. Thank you for the coffee mornings, quiz nights, non-uniform days, sponsored walks and the opportunity to attend school assemblies to say thank you in person.

If you are interested in supporting the charity in 2026/27, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Sarah to find out how we can help you raise vital funds and cancer awareness within your school or staff:

This is Men’s Health Week and we are Talking Balls.

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer amongst young men in Northern Ireland. The average age at diagnosis is just 36, but men of any age can be affected by testicular cancer.

The good news is that testicular cancer is very treatable when caught early, so it’s really important that everyone knows the key signs and symptoms to be aware of.

Our Talking Balls self-check card has a step-by-step guide on how to check yourself. The check should be carried out once a month, allowing you to be familiar with your own body and pick up quickly on any changes.

👏 Our North Down fundraising group are delighted to announce the final total from this year’s Castle Park Walk is a fantastic £2,264.84!

The annual walk in Bangor was a great success with over 45 supporters of all ages set out together in a sea of yellow to show their support to local cancer patients and their families 💛

The group would like to thank everyone who completed the walk, enjoyed a cuppa and a chat and gave so generously. Your support on the day means we can continue to help local cancer patients when they need it most.

If you are interested in organising your own sponsored walk, or would information on joining one of our fundraising groups, please contact Sarah on 028 9069 9393 or email [email protected]

At Friends of the Cancer Centre, we understand the value of the little things, which often make the biggest difference. We are proud to fund projects throughout cancer services in Northern Ireland which offer those simple touches, making things a little easier for you and your loved ones when going through cancer treatment.

We were delighted to catch up with Leah from the radiotherapy nursing team at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre, to hear about their clothing project, and the impact the charity’s funding has on the nursing team and their patients.

By donating to Friends of the Cancer Centre, you are helping us continue this vital work in offering those little touches, which make the biggest difference for local people affected by cancer. Donate online now: https://tinyurl.com/2j38dfrc
