World Homeless Day & World Mental Health Day 🧡

Homelessness is about more than not having a place to call home.

For many people experiencing homelessness, poor mental and physical health, trauma, addiction and isolation can make an already difficult situation even harder.

Today, as we mark both World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day, we're highlighting the importance of looking beyond homelessness and recognising the person behind it.

Between April 2024 and March 2026, across our services:

🧡 3,095 individuals accessed our support.
🧡 116,619 support interactions took place, covering everything from mental and physical health to basic needs and emotional support.

Behind every number is a person with their own story, challenges and hopes for the future.

At The Welcome Organisation, we know that having somewhere safe to sleep is just one part of the picture. Access to the right support, compassion and understanding can make all the difference.

Our Sleep Out is underway, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has shown up tonight to brave the October cold and support people experiencing homelessness in Belfast 🧡

Every person taking part, every donation and every bit of support helps us make a real difference to the lives of people who need it most!

A huge thank you to everyone who has swapped their warm beds for sleeping bags tonight and is standing alongside us to raise vital funds 🫶🏻

Working Together to Tackle Homelessness 🤝

Homelessness is not just a housing issue, it is also a health issue, and the growing pressures on our emergency departments highlight just how closely the two are connected.

Our colleague Dora joined The People's Kitchen and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust representatives for an important discussion around the challenges facing people experiencing homelessness who are presenting at emergency departments, often because they have nowhere else safe to go.

We're pleased to be part of these ongoing conversations and look forward to continuing to work alongside our partners to find practical, compassionate solutions for those who need them most.

Tackling homelessness requires a collective effort, and conversations like these are an important step towards meaningful change 🧡

Today it was great to meet again with the Belfast Trust management on the concerns of those presenting to our emergency departments which their primary need is housing, hearing from senior nurses on amount of aggression towards staff and looking at an agreed plan to look at how we can relieve these pressures.

We have a serious housing crisis and many of those who are not allocated accomodation often feel safer in our emergency departments, this is not the place they need to be. We have agreed to look at identifying those who repeatedly present and to work closely with all services to help relieve pressure on our emergency departments.

Thankfully there has been some progress between housing and health professionals, thanks to Dora from the Welcome Organisation for attending, only by working together we can make this situation improve.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 🗣️🧡

On Wednesday, our very own Lee-Maria visited Saintfield High School to speak with Year 12 students about the work of The Welcome Organisation and the importance of compassion, understanding and supporting those around us.

During the visit, Lee-Maria shared insights into the work we do to support people experiencing homelessness, while also speaking about 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲’𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, which was established in memory of her sister, Catherine Kenny.

Through sharing her own experiences, Lee-Maria highlighted the importance of mental health awareness, kindness and looking out for one another, encouraging students to think about the difference they can make in their own communities 💬

A huge thank you to Saintfield High School and all the Year 12 students for such a warm welcome and for taking the time to listen and engage in these important conversations! 🫶

𝗔 𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗔𝗚 𝗜𝗦𝗡’𝗧 𝗔 𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗘🧡

Last week, a very kind individual dropped off a donation of sleeping bags for our Outreach team, something that will make a real difference as the colder nights begin to set in!

For our team, handing someone a sleeping bag is always a last resort.
Our priority is to work with people who are rough sleeping to find safe accommodation and get them off the streets. But when accommodation simply isn’t available, a sleeping bag can provide some warmth and protection for someone facing a night outside.

Over July, August and September alone, our team provided 𝟭𝟰𝟮 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗴𝘀 to people sleeping rough across Belfast.

And as we head into the colder months, we know the demand for warmer 3 and 4 season sleeping bags will increase.

We receive 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗴𝘀, so we rely on the generosity of our supporters to help us keep a supply available for those nights when there is no other option.

Over the past few weeks, 18 women from our Supported Accommodation services have been taking part in the 'Art of You' project – exploring creativity as a way to express themselves, share their stories and practise mindfulness.

The first part of the project has focused on painting, and just look at some of the brilliant pieces they’ve created! 🖌️

It’s been wonderful to see each woman bring her own ideas, personality and experiences to the canvas, while having the space to slow down, get creative and try something new.

And the creativity isn’t stopping here...
🏺 Next up: pottery!
✍️ Followed by creative writing!

We can’t wait to see what they create next. Keep your eyes peeled! 👀
