Age NI

Age NI Age NI is the leading charity for older people in Northern Ireland. Our vision is a world where everyone can love later life. Our society is ageing.

More than 350,000 older people live here today and in the next twenty years, the number of people over 50 will increase by more than 30%. We deliver care services, provide advice and advocacy, offer products and services, fundraise and influence our decision-makers to improve later life for us all.

Today we launched a new report which warns of a growing “hidden housing crisis” facing older private renters.

It shines a light on the particular challenges older private renters face such as rising rents on a fixed income, the worry of eviction and homes that often don’t meet their health or mobility needs at a stage in life when stability matters most.

The number of older private renters in Northern Ireland is set to rise significantly and the challenges faced by today’s older renters are likely to become a mainstream social issue affecting future generations.

The Commissioner is calling for:
• An end to no-fault evictions, meaning landlords would not be able to evict tenants unless they had a statutory ground.
• Introduction of age discrimination with a duty on landlords to make reasonable adjustments.
• Improving minimum energy efficiency standards for all rented properties.
