The Beechmount 81 Committee held a powerful and respectful event to mark the 45th anniversary of Bobby Sands, with a strong turnout from across the community

It was great to see former POWs, old Beechies, and republicans from Iveagh in attendance, alongside a new generation

The presence of both young and old made the evening especially meaningful

A proud moment was seeing the youth take part, singing songs written by Bobby himself, keeping his words and spirit alive

We finished with Amhrán na bhFiann, showing respect and dignity to the brave men of 1981

A proud and memorable event that reflected the strength, remembrance and unity of the community.

The Beechmount 81 Committee has been working flat out over the past few days to make sure everything is in place for our community-led Bobby Sands anniversary event with songs and poems

Meeting point Hunger Strike mural Beechmount Avenue /Ancomri Street
Time 6.45pm

Our black flags are now up on the mural to mark the anniversary of the hunger strikers

A big thank you to the local resident who looks after the flags every year it’s always appreciated

We’ll also have posters and black flags available for anyone who wants to take part in the white line picket

All are welcome to attend and stand in remembrance.

The Beechmount ’81 Committee, in light of everything going on around the Bobby Sands statue, calls on the people of West Belfast to stand together to keep Bobby Sands’ name alive and remembered in a positive light.

On the 5th of May meeting at hunger strike mural Beechmount avenue/Ancomri Street 6.45pm

we will be gathering to remember Bobby

This is an open invitation and a call for unity across the community.

There will be songs and poetry as we reflect on his life, his sacrifice, and what he meant to so many

He was a hero and an icon for many, and the working-class people of West Belfast will remember him with pride and respect.

Let this be a moment that brings people together, honours his legacy, and ensures future generations understand the history and the spirit he represented.

After weeks of bringing local people together engaging with local artists, and battling the bad weather the Beechmount 81 Committee is proud to have played our part organizing and supplying the paint and getting stuck in

Today we completed the restoration of the original 1981 mural, painted by local youth/artist from the area

Forty-five years on, it has been brought back to its former self, brightened with fresh paint for a new generation to see.

Throughout this project, the support from local residents and everyone who stopped to speak with us was brilliant to witness.

That’s what this is about the people, our history, and remembering what our community went through during the Hunger Strikes.

We will always remember, and as a community we will keep the flame alive. 🇮🇪✊🏼
