Message from L’Arche Belfast:
In line with our Mission and Identity Statement, which states that we aim to “celebrate the unique value of every person and recognise our interdependence” and to “engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society”, the Board of Directors, CEO and wider L’Arche Belfast community are saddened by the violence that has occurred in some areas of our city in the last several days. As a community that strives to be a place of welcome for everyone, we offer our full support and solidarity for all affected by these events. We condemn the violent actions of a small number of persons which have spread fear and intimidation throughout our city and which have targeted some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
We recognise that many of our staff from minority ethnic backgrounds are at increased risk of hostility and discrimination on our streets simply because of their race, ethnicity, or perceived difference. Some are new to this country, some have been settled here for many years, and others have been born and raised here. Each is a valued and respected member of our community, bringing unique gifts, perspectives and experiences that enrich our shared life. We acknowledge the fear, anxiety and concern felt both within our own L’Arche Belfast community and across the wider community, and we remain committed to providing a safe place of welcome, belonging and mutual respect for all.
