We were delighted to welcome the Secretary Of State and NIO Ministers to our breakfast morning who spoke with our volunteers and those using our service. They listened to the concerns and challenges for those experiencing homelessness, addiction and mental health problems and have give commitment that they will work with the NI Executive to reduce rough sleeping.

As Andy Burnham has committed to “everyone in” for Christmas, we hope this can be achieved in Northern Ireland. We need long term commitment from the NIO & the NI Executive to end round sleeping which can be achieved.

Prime Minister Burnham announces that everyone in England will be offered accommodation by Christmas as he pledges to end rough sleeping. We will writing to the prime minister to urge him to extend this to NI. Sadly after launching our end rough sleeping charter at Stormont fifteen months ago nothing has changed, our current NI Executive have continually ignored the needs of those on our streets, what this needs is political leadership.

Hopefully this Christmas, we will see no one on our streets also.

It has been an exceptionally busy night for our team at drop-in as we provided over 200 meals this evening and our outreach are currently on the streets. Lots struggling with an addiction and their mental health, while some had been assaulted and brought to A&E for medical treatment. What we have noticed is an increase in many of those presenting with infections due to injecting use and quickly becoming unwell.

This weekend we have completed 15 referrals and very little got offered a safe place to stay. While we continue to highlight this, it’s clear that this is being ignored politically and from those tasked in housing and goverment departments to deal with this. What does it take for you to listen? Lives are being put at risk and every person on our streets deserves the support they are desperately crying out for.

We are very grateful to staff from the BT Group who completed a sleep out last night to raise funds for the People’s Kitchen and raised over £3,000. Support like this helps us to continue to deliver all our services. Huge thanks to our team member Ali for all her commitment and support to those most vulnerable across Belfast.

We have seen political parties highlight the need for pedestrianised zones and the highlights of the Fleadh in Belfast which has been amazing. A city that can shine, sadly with every City we have vulnerable individuals homeless and who have no place to call home.

While we can focus on the amazing week, let’s not forget those who sadly do not feel part of society, those sleeping rough, struggling with their mental health or an addiction. Extra provision was put in place, why not all year round? This is a political choice. If interested, we should arrange a protest at Belfast City Hall.

It was great to see Linda & Rosaleen from Clothes For All who set up with us tonight. It was a busy evening working with the Welcome Organisation & housing executive making referrals to secure temporary accommodation and provide transport for those presenting for support. While some referrals were successful we had to step in and provide accommodation.

It’s been an incredibly busy week as we opened additional hours to support those vulnerable and homeless during the Fleadh, while it has been challenging we are very thankful to all the volunteers for committing to more hours and working with other voluntary organisations & services. We have been providing,

- Housing clinics provided by the NIHE
- Additional drop-in hours
- Nightly outreach across the City
- Working closely with Belfast Trust Inclusion Service
- Attending daily briefings
- Working closely with Belfast City Council community safety team

It has been fantastic to see additional provision but we must ensure this continues throughout the year. Belfast has significant problems with homelessness, addiction and mental health and we must ensure those walking our streets are able to get the support they desperately need.

We will be calling on all departments responsible to continue with the increase in provision & to help address these serious issues on the streets of Belfast.
