People's Kitchen Belfast

It’s been another busy day for our team and it’s always great to see the team from Clothes For All tonight providing much needed clothes, trainers and underwear for those presenting to drop-in.

Today it was great to link in with Team Haven & Teen Challenge sharing resources, supporting each other’s work and this evening we completed multiple referrals to the NIHE and got assistance from the Welcome Organisation with transport.

Working in the homeless sector can be challenging but by only working together we can ensure those who need our help get it & achieve a lot more.

Today it was great to meet again with the Belfast Trust management on the concerns of those presenting to our emergency departments which their primary need is housing, hearing from senior nurses on amount of aggression towards staff and looking at an agreed plan to look at how we can relieve these pressures.

We have a serious housing crisis and many of those who are not allocated accomodation often feel safer in our emergency departments, this is not the place they need to be. We have agreed to look at identifying those who repeatedly present and to work closely with all services to help relieve pressure on our emergency departments.

Thankfully there has been some progress between housing and health professionals, thanks to Dora from the Welcome Organisation for attending, only by working together we can make this situation improve.

It’s been an incredibly busy time for our team every night in Belfast supporting those who have no place to call home. Providing hot food, sleeping bags, clothes and sign posting to other services.

We soon will be launching our dedicated phone number for those sleeping rough each night, advocating and highlighting their struggles to the housing executive, this year we have placed over 179 individuals into non-standard accomodation to prevent rough sleeping, this was without any goverment funding and generosity from the community.

Homelessness should be a focus for goverment & this year we will continue to work hard to ensure that no one is on our streets over Christmas.

Tonight’s mass of hope and healing at Holy Cross Church was incredible, thanks to everyone who attended, shared their testimonies, Liza Trainor for the beautiful music and services for attending to provide support.

We are extremely grateful to Fr Aidan Troy & Fr Charles for their compassion and allowing us to organise this event. Sharing awareness and giving hope to those struggling is so important and we hope to make this a regular event throughout the year.

We are devastated to hear the death of Michael Lombard, a man who dedicated his life to help those in need. Michael has been with us from the very start dedicating his time for regular shifts each week at drop-in and outreach, nothing was ever a bother. The impact he made on the streets of Belfast was incredible.

His commitment to those at the Morning Star Hostel, People’s Kitchen, Northern Ireland Hospice and as teacher for many years will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Michael’s family and friends, may he RIP. You will be sadly missed by us all 💔 🙏
