The graphic is highlighting a very serious global issue: extreme poverty, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, and the proportion of people living on very low incomes. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is ranked first in this image, with 85.3% of its population supposedly living on less than $3 per day. 🌍
The DRC is a particularly striking example because it is rich in natural resources but much of its population remains extremely poor.
Several factors help explain this contradiction. 🇨🇩
1. Conflict and displacement
2. Vast mineral wealth, but unequal benefits.
3. Poor infrastructure and limited access to services.
What can make a meaningful difference? Reducing extreme poverty requires more than emergency food aid.
Long-term progress depends on several things working together:
Peace and security: allowing families to return home, farm safely and rebuild their livelihoods.
Education: improving access to quality schooling and vocational training, especially for girls and young people.
Healthcare and nutrition: enabling children to grow, learn and participate fully in society.
Infrastructure: improving roads, electricity, clean water and access to markets.
Sustainable livelihoods: creating jobs beyond mining and supporting farmers, entrepreneurs and local businesses.
Accountability and governance: ensuring that public revenue and natural-resource wealth benefit communities through services and economic opportunities.
