And finally, some celebrations to finish off the most amazing challenge! First we had a welcome down celebration, followed by a dinner with traditional Tanzanian entertainment and a much needed drink. Then there was the award’s ceremony where we received our ISO certified mountain climbing certificate and medals.

After flying out of Tanzania and getting some final views of the mountain, I got to visit my Aunt Sue, the inspiration behind this whole journey. It was brilliant to catch up with all the family in England and a special thanks to Kathleen Ashby for hosting a lovely get together.

Finally, I got back to Ireland where I got to celebrate with the rest of the family and relax properly after the most amazing journey. A huge thank you to Kathleen Hanratty for throwing a celebratory afternoon tea for my return.

It is impossible to explain how difficult this journey was but it was the most amazing experience of my life. Truly a once in a life time opportunity.

If anyone would like to make any final donations, the Just Giving page will be active for a few more days. Thank you to everyone for all your kindness. The support has been second to none!

Summit Night🇹🇿🏔️

There are no words to articulate how difficult summit night was. By far the most gruelling hours of my life, both mentally and physically. We got up at 10pm to extreme winds and sub zero temperatures. It was impossible to get warm even with 7 layers of clothes on and hand warmers. We had some food in the mess tent before starting the 1100 metre ascent in complete darkness at 11pm. Every one of us experienced altitude sickness to some extent making the climb the most mentally draining experience. It was -15°C and the tears were freezing to our face as we walked. After 6 hours of hiking, we reached the rim of the volcano, standing at a height of 5756metres at around 5am. At this stage the sun was beginning to rise and we could see the most amazing sunrise. After the hardest hour of my life, we climbed the last 100metres to reach Uhuru Peak at 5895metres. This is the highest point in Africa and the summit of the tallest free standing mountain in the world. ‘Africa’s Rooftop’ as the locals call it! Statistically, of all people who express an interest in climbing Kilimanjaro only 1% get on a flight to Tanzania. Of that 1%, there is a summit success rate of between 45-60%. Reaching Uhuru Peak places an individual in the top 0.5% of those who have ever expressed serious interest in scaling the mountain. Succeeding at this challenge was by far the proudest moment of my life🤍

Day 5🇹🇿🏔️

Day 5 started with an early rise before leaving the Karanga valley. We ascended through alpine desert where cairns are used to guide hikers if there is poor visibility in the clouds. We arrived at Barafu camp where there was a warning regarding the high risks of altitude. At this stage there we had ascended from ‘very high altitude’ into ‘extremely high altitude’, bringing plenty of new challenges. After a small break, we ascended up another 200metres to Kosovo camp. After an hour long briefing, we were sent to our tents at 3pm to prepare for the summit hike which would commence at 11pm. There was no chance of sleeping with the extreme winds. The winds were so bad that the toilet tents couldn’t stay up!

Day 4

Such a difficult day today, pushing through mental barriers and fears. Much shorter day but scrambling/rock climbing up the Baranco wall made up for it! A once in a life time experience (which I hope I will never have to repeat😂). After reaching 4200m, we descended into the Karanga valley for the most beautiful sunset!

Day 2

Big tree camp through to Shira camp 2. Such a difficult day with 11.5 hours of hiking. Starting off in the rainforest and seeing some monkeys before a huge assent up into the drier terrain. Saw the most amazing sunset imaginable. The photos do not do it justice at all. 22 kilometres travelled on day 2 and the first sight of the end goal!!! Mild altitude sickness but feeling strong.

Excited to be setting off for the adventure of a life time! It’s hard to believe that just 10 months ago I signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and now, after over £8.5K has been raised for the charity, the day has come to start the journey. ⁣

Please see the link below if anyone would like to donate before, during or after the climb 🗻🇹🇿🤍

How brilliant is Majella Dillon, learning a new version of the traditional set dance, Saint Patrick’s Day!
