Ever wondered what a day at Phoenix Education Centre actually looks like? 👀

From mentoring and qualifications to maths, ICT, planning, paperwork, phone calls and everything in between…there’s a lot that goes into helping our community move forward.

And while the timetable might say the day ends at 3pm, anyone who works in education knows that’s not quite how it works. Every lesson planned, form filled in and conversation had is part of the bigger picture - making sure each person gets the support, tools and opportunities they need to take their next step 💛

Emma, our Founder was recently invited to speak in the panel at “40 years on – Reflections on How an International Fund supported Peace and Prosperity in Ireland”.

This was a thought-provoking event reflecting on the relationships, leadership and long-term investment that have helped support peace and prosperity in Northern Ireland.

We heard from Thomas O’Neill III, son of former US Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill, who shared reflections on his father’s approach to politics and the importance he placed on building relationships across divides.

Seán Donlon, former Irish Ambassador to the US, also spoke about the role of engagement and advocacy in the US in encouraging investment in peace and economic prosperity in Northern Ireland.

A panel featuring two former Chairs of the International Fund for Ireland explored how the Fund was established, the challenges it faced and some of the milestones along the way.

Emma took part in a panel looking at the positive impact this kind of funding has had on communities.

A few key themes really had an impact: relationships matter; trust and communication are essential; rebuilding trust in institutions and those in positions of influence takes time and much of the most important peacebuilding happens quietly, away from the spotlight.

It was also a reminder of how decisions and political relationships in the US can have very real effects here in Northern Ireland.

A valuable conversation about the work that has gone before and the importance of continuing to invest in relationships, communities and peace.

Last week we kicked off our Let’s Talk programme with the women from Atlas Women’s Centre, opening up conversations around identity, culture and belonging.

We were delighted to be joined by Lee Reynolds Commissioner for Ulster-Scots and Ulster-British Tradition who shared his insights into Ulster-Scots identity and the importance of culture, heritage and language.

It sparked a really interesting conversation about identity, traditions, language and the different experiences that shape who we are.

The women brought their own perspectives, questions and experiences into the conversation - exactly what Let’s Talk is about: creating space for open conversations about identity and the issues we perhaps don’t get enough opportunities to explore together.

And this is only our first conversation, with lots more to come over the coming months.

👋 Our Level 1 BSL participants are getting ready to take the next step…

After completing their Introduction to British Sign Language course, they’ll soon be moving on to Level 2, which means we’re getting ready to welcome a brand-new group of Level 1 learners! 💛

Our Introduction to BSL course is always hugely popular and is a brilliant opportunity to learn the basics of British Sign Language, build confidence in everyday communication and develop a skill that can help make our community more inclusive and accessible.

Whether you’re completely new to BSL or have always been curious to learn, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support of The National Lottery Community Fund Northern Ireland, whose funding helps make the S.P.A.R.C (Supporting People and Resilient Communities) project possible.

Through this programme, young people are given the opportunity to improve mental wellbeing, strengthen relationships and build confidence.

The impact goes far beyond the programme itself. This support helps young people feel valued, supported and more confident about their future - while also creating a positive ripple effect for families and the wider community.
