The Bedford Langar Project

The Bedford Langar Project Free curry meal initiative for the Homeless and in need of Bedford and surrounding areas. The Whole concept is about providing a meal with no hidden agnda.

The Bedford Langar project is providing hot authentic Punjabi Curry meals for the Homeless, families, individuals and those in need. The project is inspired by the Sikh concept of Langar or Free Communal Kitchen which is present in every Sikh Gurdwara and is open to all regardless of race, religion, gender or social standing to sit and enjoy a free meal. All the cooking is done by volunteers as is

the serving of the food and the community all donate ingredients for making the meal. Akaal Seva members decided it was time to take such an amazing charitable concept like Langar into the wider community and were overjoyed when Bedfordshire Housinglink were more than happy to get involved and become a partner in the initiative. All ingredients are donated by the Bedford community and the food is prepared at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Queens Park by volunteers. and then taken into town to be served in Church Square (Affectionatly known as Pigeon Square and is round the back of the Bus Stop). The project is set up to run on the first Sunday of every month and all are welcome to partake of the food served. In keeping with another Sikh concept called Seva (Selfless Service To Mankind) all volunteers are unpaid and no preaching or conversion is allowed. If a client asks a question about Sikhism or Sikhs then a volunteer will answer otherwise its all about the Langar. Food can be eaten there or they will provide a takeaway service for those that wish to eat at home. Serving starts at 6pm and continues till around 7:15pm. If you would like to donate find out about the project and or volunteering opportunities please feel free to call The Bedford |Langar Project directly on 07539 19987

Zekher tzadik livrakha
On behalf of all our supporters, volunteers and clients we offer our condolences to the Jewish community for today's heinous disgusting attack on such a holy day.
There can be no justification for such an attack that was nothing more than an attack on the whole Jewish community worldwide.
We also offer condolences and love from the Sikh community locally, nationally, and internationally.
Please accept our prayers for the victims

Thank You Manjit for everything you did and enlightening our lives

So today we'd like to invite you all to celebrate, remember and try some authentic Punjabi food aswell as seen what we do
Please join us at Church Square (aka Pigeon Square), Bedford at 6pm tonight

We just want to take this opportunity to send a HUGE Thank You to all the staff and management of Puttenhoe Care Home in Bedford for their kind donation of essential items like blankets, sheets, curtains etc.
Our volunteers were genuinely taken a back as to the amount they donated to help those in our town that need them. and will receive them FREE
Curtains are something for example that do t spring to mind as something people need. However it can take people by surprise how many people who've managed to find housing don't actually have curtains, leading people to have to use alternative items like bed sheets or even bin bags!
Curtains can also have a huge positive psychological effect as can provide a sense of security and privacy. Also simply having the control of your own personal environment can help people hugely mentally as well as physically by reducing draughts too.
This is the type of generosity and support we as a group have come to expect in and around Bedford for over 10 years of The Bedford Langar Project running our Street Langars (curry nights etc) and show exactly why we are so proud that one of our founders/volunteers has reached the finals of the Bedford Independent Everyday Heroes Awards in the category of Raising The Profile Of Bedford.
Thank You again to all Staff and Residents at Puttenhoe Care Home you truly are amazing!
