Bedfordshire is now officially in drought.

Combined with prolonged hot weather and very little rainfall, this means the county remains at a very high risk of wildfire.

July has seen just 7% of the average rainfall in England so far. The Met Office has said that there is no sign of sustained rainfall that would make a significant different to the dry conditions we’re currently experiencing.

Since the beginning of June, our crews have attended more than 300 fires in the open, and we're urging everyone to help reduce the risk of further incidents.

Please:
• dispose of garden and household waste via collection services and recycling centres, rather than bonfires and garden fires
• avoid using disposable barbecues, particularly near dry grass or vegetation
• reconsider setting off fireworks and paper lanterns
• take your litter home with you, especially glass bottles

If you spot a fire, call 999 and ask for the fire service ❤️ 🚒

A single spark can start a wildfire. Please help us keep Bedfordshire, its communities and natural spaces safe this summer.

Reminder to anyone, local or not using Priory Country Park! Please don’t put the wildlife, properties & residents at risk. It’s just not worth it! Also, please don’t flick cigarette butts as it’s so dry over there, not much is needed to cause a fire. Thank you!

Pack a picnic, not a BBQ 🔥

Bedfordshire’s green spaces are a great place to spend the hot weather - but it only takes a single spark to start a fire that could spread fast and ruin a place we all enjoy.

Please help protect our parks, woodlands and beauty spots by choosing a picnic instead of a BBQ.

- Disposable BBQs can scorch grass and stay hot for hours
- Hot ash in bins can ignite instantly
- Even a tiny ember can set dry vegetation alight

Let’s keep our green spaces green - pack the snacks, skip the flames, and enjoy the sunshine safely ☀️

Could this be an option for Riverfield? There are 3 groups set up across the estate. Wouldn’t it be great to have one for each road?!
