Sotterley Chapel

Sotterley Chapel Sotterley Chapel is unique and much-loved, and has been part of the village since 1883. We invite you to visit the Chapel and enjoy the events we run.

Sotterley Chapel may be found by the War Memorial in the village of Sotterley, in Suffolk, UK. It is an unusual octagonal building and plays an important part in the life of the village of Sotterley. The Sotterley Chapel Preservation Trust runs a calendar of events and services every year. History
The land to form the graveyard was sold by the Barne family to a newly formed local Burial Board, rep

resenting the freeholders of Sotterley, for £20 in 1883. Mrs Barne paid for the Chapel and presented it to the village. The Bishop of Norwich consecrated the Chapel and grounds. The Custodians of the Chapel, with responsibility for the graveyard, are now Shadingfield, Sotterley, Willingham and Ellough Joint Parish Council. Sotterley Chapel Preservation Trust was formed in 2005 to ensure that this unique and much-loved building remains available for the parish, both for its original use and for community events. The location of the Chapel and the events taking place can be found on this page. The Sotterley Preservation Trust
Since 2005 we have re-roofed the Chapel, replaced the pamment-tiled floor, mended the stonework, re-leaded the windows and painted the interior with traditional limewash. The pews have comfy cushioning and there is battery-powered electricity available for lighting and a small organ. We maintain the graveyard and, in consultation with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, we have established a fine variety of wild flowers, which we celebrate in summer open days.

“Come and join us at Sotterley Chapel on 3rd August to celebrate Lughanasadh and Lammas. Lughanasadh and Lammas are the Pagan and Christian rituals celebrating the first harvest of the year. As is so often the case, the Pagan is the fore-runner of the Christian ritual and they merge to give us our celebration and thanks for the first fruits of the Harvest. At 10.30 am we are holding a Corn Dolly workshop and then at 3.00 pm the first loaf baked with grain from this year’s harvest will be shared as part of our Communion service led by Rev Mark Bee”. Everyone welcome!”
