Tomorrow, 24 Oct is World Polio Day!
Our club recently held frugal meal to raise money for the End Polio Now Campaign. The event, led by founder member Rotarian Robert Jackson, was attended by 36 Rotarians and guests and the food, consisting of soup and sandwiches, was prepared and served by one of our Honorary Members, Carol Parkinson.

The evening also marked the very special occasion of the 90th birthday of Rtn Robert. Robert was presented with a card, certificate of recognition, a meal voucher and a photo album of his time in the Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites. A birthday cake was shared by all present and, of course, we sung Happy Birthday! An emotional evening for a valued member.

Following the meal, our guest speaker was Andrew Stokes who regaled us with a lighthearted and sometimes hilarious tales of Yorkshire life and its people!

Rtn Robert, with the assistance of some of our members, updated the audience with the numbers of Polio cases across the world, demonstrating the progress that has been made since the Rotary launched the PolioPlus campaign in 1985.

The event raised £692, and this figure is multiplied by 3 to £2,076 thanks to the ongoing support from the Gates Foundation and WHO.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and supported our coffee morning fundraiser for RotaKids today. The event was a fantastic success, raising over £530 - which is simply brilliant!! Thanks also to the organisers, ticket sellers and all who provided cakes and items for the stalls. A very successful team effort!

At a recent meeting we were delighted to welcome representatives from Happy Memories and Kirklees Dementia Hub, along with our local Tesco Batley Extra Community Champions, who have also supporting these charities this year. Monika (KDH) and Cath (HM) informed our members of the fantastic work they do to support those living with dementia in our local community. Happy Memories is a volunteer run organisation which is funded by donations and fundraising activities. As such, we were delighted to make a donation of £500 from money we raised in the local community, especially at our Santa Sleigh collections in Tesco.
