✨Extra projects… ✨
As we are coming to the end of our time in Uganda, we would like to share some other projects that we have been working on in the background of the basketball court.
WASHING LINES 🧼
The pupils who stay at the hostels at Bishop Williger’s Secondary School desperately needed more hanging space to dry their clothes. Previously, they had been drying their clean clothes on the ground around their hostel. We designed a 21 meter long structure and set it along the side of the girls hostel with several washing lines to increase their hanging space significantly.
LIGHTENING CONDUCTOR ⚡️
The nursery dormitory’s lighting conductor had snapped out of the ground at St Micheal’s Primary School. This meant that the girls were not protected against lightning strikes which often are the cause of dormitory fires in Uganda. We bought a new strip of a lightning conductor from the UK and worked with local builders to repair the existing conductor, and concrete the new rod into the ground.
NETBALL POST AND DOCTORS SCREEN WELDING 🏐
We organised the welder to come a fix the netball post which was broken at St Michael’s. The welders reinforced the hoops so they should now last a lot longer. The girls now have two working netball posts and can play proper games.
MASTERPLAN OF PARISH OWNER’S LAND 🌿
We discussed with Father Matius how he could develop an area of land for the pupils of his brass band to live in. This site will give them a safe place to live and practice their music. We surveyed the site and have drawn up plans on CAD to allow him to visualise how the different areas and how they may be arranged. This includes a girl’s wing, a boy’s wing, an arena, a guest houses and storage.
BRICK PRESS 🧱
We experimented with the ingredients for interlocking stabilised soil bricks alongside local contractors who were hoping to make a business out of renting out their labour and the brick press to build local people’s houses.
