You’ve probably asked yourself this question before.

You’re about to step outside of your comfort zone, grab your swim bag & hop in the car on a Sunday morning to try IceBreakers for yourself.

But what should you really expect when you get there? 20 people? 4? Nobody?

Truth is, like the river, it ebbs & flows. The weather is an indicator, but not as much as you’d think.

First clear & sunny morning in a month of rain? Yeah, there’ll be double digits ready to dip.

But on that stark, crisp, frosty morning when your bed is calling you’ll still find 6, 8, maybe 12 of our members with warm smiles and determined faces, keen to reset in water so cold it stings.

That’s how this community works.

Together, on good and not-so-good days.

A helpful guide for those who are joining us this Sunday (or any week) at Warleigh Weir.

Cold water alone is a challenge.
Cold water with others is an experience.

It becomes a weekly reminder that…

• You don’t need to do every hard thing alone.
What feels impossible solo becomes manageable together.
• Shared discomfort, shared accomplishment.
Doing something hard side-by-side removes a level of social constraint afterwards. You acknowledge & are acknowledged in turn.
• It builds real camaraderie, real community.
Many adult men struggle to create new friendships. Shared challenges (and also shared walks & shared cuppas) are often a route to genuine bonds of friendship.
• No forced conversation required.
You don’t need small talk. The experience itself is quite enough.
• Encouragement comes naturally in this context.
A few words from someone next to you can be the difference between getting in and not, between coming back and not.
• It balances your bodies weekday bad habits.
We could do a full post on the physical benefits alone, but simply put: It’s the best remedy to sitting at your desk hunched over for 5 days out of every 7.
• The mental health benefits are immediate and long lasting.
A clearer mind, improved mood, focus and alertness from the moment you get in. Self-confidence (from completing something uncomfortable), increased tolerance & resilience, and reductions in chronic stress, broken sleep & brain fog are noted longer term benefits also.
• It becomes a ritual, not just an activity
When done regularly with the same group, it creates structure, accountability, and something to look forward to.
