Five new full members of the Rotary Club of Bath, including four women, were inducted at a packed-out meeting in February. It's an indicator of how the Club is changing and challenging perceptions of what a Rotarian, and a Rotary Club, can be.

President Richard Bush formally welcomed two new members to the the Club, Ian Taylor and Vicky Whipp, alongside three former Associate Members, Anna Beria, Sam Chapman and Di Gill.

This brings total membership to over 40, as we continue in our efforts to grow the Club and its connections, and increase our ability to do good in our local community and make a positive difference in the wider world.

Cooking up a Community Storm.

President of the Rotary Club of Bath Richard Bush visited the Bath Community Kitchen to formally present the organisation with a donation of £2,500.

The money was raised at the Rotary Club’s Fireworks on the Rec event in November.

Bath Community Kitchen founder Rob Lewis and Director Marc Radley were joined by Rotarians Chris and Paul, and Paul’s grandson Finn. The three had spent the afternoon as part of the volunteer team which prepared the food for the regular Thursday evening community meal in Twerton.

An exciting, Indian-flavours inspired menu, with spiced apple turnover for pudding, was rustled up by the volunteer team, under the expert guidance of professional chef, Rob, and served free of charge to around 25 local people.

The evening was, as the name suggests, not just about good food but also about community. It was a lovely evening of fellowship, fun and very good food.

A Mayoral Journey:
We were greatly honoured to host the Right Worshipful Mayor of Bath, Cllr Professor Bharat Pankhania, in January at one of our regular lunch meetings.

The Mayor, who is half-way through his one year term of office, has been a great supporter of Rotary across the city. He attended our Fireworks display in November and read a lesson at our packed-out community Carol Service in Bath Abbey, and this was a chance for us to say thank you for his enthusiastic support.

Invited to speak to us about “how I got here”, the Mayor took us back to his early life growing up in Kenya “not India, as some think”, before dramatically being taken out of school and escaping from growing ethnic tensions, to land up in Leicester. It was, he admitted, a difficult transition, even if made by his parents with the best intentions.

His schooldays in Leicester were not happy: the National Front were marching and his school was unprepared and disinterested in “these exotic brown boys who had arrived unexpectedly on their doorstep.” He soon realised he had to sort out his education himself and, in one of those life-changing moments which seem miraculous, he was walking along a street in Leicester past the University Library, and – “I don’t know why” – decided to go in and take a look.

“I had no right to be there. But no-one stopped me. So I went to the old card indexes, and looked up the O-level curriculum for the subjects I wanted, which my school wasn’t even entering me for. There were reading lists, so I went to my local library, created several memberships under slightly different versions of my name – you could do that then – and borrowed all the books I needed.”

He passed his exams with flying colours, and won at place at University to study medicine “because it was a seven year course, and I loved studying. It was a few years before I realised that graduating in medicine meant I would become a doctor!”

The Mayor’s theme for his year is “Education is Empowerment”. It’s not hard to see why.

Rotarians Chris and Simon, who lead on the organisation of our Fireworks on the Rec - supported by a great team of Rotarians and with help from many others - were delighted to present a cheque for £2,500 to Sarah from Bath Rugby Foundation.

The Rotary duo were persuaded to do so at half-time, on the pitch, during the match against Exeter at the iconic Bath Rugby ground on January 3rd. As two long-standing season-ticket holders, it didn't take much persuasion!

We are delighted to be able to support the excellent work of Bath Rugby Foundation, and we hope as a Club to do more in the future.

Community supporting community 💙
We were proud to receive a £2,500 cheque from Rotary Club of Bath at the Bath Rugby vs Exeter Chiefs match on Saturday 3rd December, following their fantastic Rec Firework Night.

This generous donation will help us continue supporting children and young people across our community - thank you for choosing us as one of your charities.

Over £3,500 for local homeless charity Julian House was collected by the Rotary Club of Bath in the run-up to Christmas 2025.

Members of the Club organised collections during Carols around the Christmas Tree on two evenings during the Bath Christmas Market, as well as arranging a retiring collection at the end of the Club's annual carol service in Bath Abbey.

Both events included performances from the Lucis Choir, while the carol service included music provided by the Salvation Army brass band, and the children’s choir from Bathwick St Mary’s Church School.

The Mayor of Bath, Cllr. Prof. Bharat Pankhania read one of the lessons at the carol service, as did Richard Ingle, Chief Executive of Bath Building Society which once again kindly sponsored the event.

A completely packed Abbey of over 800 underlined the community nature of the event: attendees included residents of local care homes, friends and families of those performing, representatives of Bath Building Society and Julian House, and even a surprise delegation of young players from Bath Rugby.

As Rotary Club President Richard Bush wrote in the order of service, “In these times of unrest and suffering throughout so many areas of our world, we are indeed fortunate to be able to come together in our lovely Abbey..."

Our Carol Service in a packed Abbey this week was a joyful affair. Great music, special readings from the Christmas story, and people from across the city in attendance.

Some surprise members of the joined us. Charming, friendly, sporting heroes...but enough about the Mayor of Bath and our President Richard. Who were these rather tall photobombers?! 😆

Seriously, what a nice bunch of young men: it was a pleasure to have them join the event.
