As Volunteers' Week continues, we are really pleased to share another local story from our spotlight series. Today, we’re highlighting Paul and sending a big thank you his way for the incredible time and energy he gives to the community. 🛠️☕

Paul retired 20 years ago after a 40-year career in computing, and he has spent his retirement supporting an impressive array of local causes. From acting as a charity Trustee and Treasurer to driving for the Red Cross, Paul has poured his time into doing good. Right now, you can find him on Saturday mornings volunteering his practical skills as a repairer for the fantastic Share and Repair!

Paul loves the teamwork that comes with volunteering, and he has a wonderfully grounded perspective on giving back: “I don't 'volunteer' ... I just do jobs that need to be done for worthy causes.”

His top tip for anyone thinking about dipping their toe into the community sector?
💬 “Give it a go. See how you like it. Don't commit a lot of time until you're sure. Most of all ... have fun!”

It’s Volunteers' Week! 😊 From June 1st–5th, we are celebrating the incredible impact volunteers have across Bath & North East Somerset. On behalf of all our members - the charities, community groups, and Third Sector organisations in B&NES - 3SG wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who gives their time so generously. 💚

To mark the week, we are sharing inspiring local stories to show our appreciation and inspire others. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Claire! 🌟

Claire has a background in education and care, but is currently gaining hands-on events experience by volunteering with the Climate Hub. From Sustainable Fashion Week to 'Craftivisms', Claire has thrown herself into creating positive change while building her own skills and career confidence.

As Claire says: “Choose somewhere you are passionate about! But be clear about your boundaries. [...] I enjoy the volunteering but I do need to rein myself in at times.”

This year, the peer network programme brought together 12 charity leaders from across B&NES. Together, they explored what leadership in 2026 could look like, guided by Sarah Williment, founder of The Questioning Iris Co., and her insightful approach to learning.

The initiative is made possible through Social Economy West, with the aim of nurturing a thriving and sustainable local charity sector. 3SG is delighted to be offering this opportunity again.

Caroline Frances King from The Museum of East Asian Art shared this lovely thought after the session: “This is such an important network for charity leaders - it gives us the space to connect more deeply, learn from one another, and grow as a collective.”

Applications are still open for fully funded support via the Social Economy West project. Find out more here - https://www.3sg.org.uk/sew - or reach out to ✉[email protected]

Shout out to the amazing Sarah for facilitating, and James at Roseberry Road Studios for hosting us in their lovely waterfront space!

We can’t quite believe Rob Wicke has been with us for two months already! 😊 As our Third Sector Somer Valley Development Manager, he’s been busy hitting the ground running and catching up with local community groups across Radstock, Westfield, and Midsomer Norton.

He recently met with Holly over a coffee at Muse Café in Midsomer Norton. Holly is a great example of the dedicated people keeping local initiatives running - she volunteers her time to support the 5 Arches Parkrun, alongside her day job providing fundraising and operational support to The Green House charity.

Now that he’s a couple of months into the role, Rob shared a key reflection on what he's been hearing from these early conversations:

💬 “Across the groups and organisations I’ve been meeting, a consistent message is coming through: there’s a real need for more volunteers – from trustees to front-of-house support. Just as importantly, there’s a strong focus on looking after the wellbeing of both staff and volunteers, recognising the vital role they play in our communities.”

We’re delighted to have Rob strengthening our support across the Somer Valley. If you run a local group or charity and want to connect, please feel free to drop him a message - [email protected] - or say hello if you spot him out and about.

In the midst of all the excitement (and chaos!) of preparing to launch ThirdSpace - A Home for the Third Sector, we’ve also been celebrating another special milestone 🎉

This week marks 4 years of Becky as 3SG Director.

Since stepping into the role in May 2022, Becky has helped shape our direction, grown and supported the team, and consistently championed and fiercely advocated for our 260+ member charities with dedication and integrity. We feel incredibly proud - and very lucky - to have her leading and inspiring us.

On Monday we paused for homemade lemon drizzle (huge thanks to Paula 🍋), flowers and a card - a small but important moment to celebrate amidst the busyness.

Here are a few words from Becky to mark the occasion…

"It is an absolute privilege to be the Director at 3SG - those four years have flown by. We have come a really long way in that time and I am so excited for the organisation's future, especially as we open our brand new office and ThirdSpace for our members next week. We're working in a really challenging environment and it isn't always easy, but my brilliant colleagues and our amazing members make it so worthwhile."
