Small Charity Week Spotlight #2: The Bird of Prey Project πŸ¦…βœ¨

As we continue through Small Charity Week, we are thrilled to put the spotlight on another fantastic 3SG member doing brilliant work right on our doorstep: The Bird of Prey Project!

Based in Newton St. Loe, Bath, this multi-award-winning visitor attraction and registered charity is home to 20 birds of prey. They combine an amazing visitor experience with crucial conservation work and accessible education programs for all ages.

Like many small charities, they face big everyday hurdles - with funding, capacity, and even the British weather throwing challenges their way! But their dedicated team of paid staff, volunteers, and trustees are driven by a pure passion for local wildlife, keeping each other motivated and moving forward.

We’ve been delighted to support them through our Social Economy West project. Through the program, expert advisors like Dan helped them benchmark their pricing to balance income with inclusivity, while Ollie provided a stakeholder framework to spark fresh ways to engage volunteers and members. They even gained valuable insights from external expertise to help shape their long-term growth and funding strategy!

πŸ‘‰ Check out the reel and maybe even pay them a visit to see the beautiful birds and learn more about their vision for expanding conservation: https://birdofpreyproject.org/

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a Red Heat-Health Alert effective from 01:00am Wednesday 24 June until 11:00pm Thursday 25 June.

B&NES Council has entered emergency planning due to the significant risk high temperatures pose to health and social care services, particularly for older people (65+), young children, and those with underlying health conditions.

As the infrastructure charity for Bath & North East Somerset, 3SG is sharing the Council’s emergency guidance to help protect our local community. Whether you are a local resident or a charity supporting vulnerable people, please take note of the safety actions below:

🏠 For Local Residents & Volunteers:
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

πŸͺŸ Keep cool indoors: Close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day, and open windows only when it becomes cooler outside.

β˜€οΈ Avoid peak heat: Stay out of the sun where possible, particularly between 11am and 3pm. Protect your skin if you must go outdoors.

πŸ‘‹ Check on others: Please look out for isolated neighbours, older relatives, or vulnerable friends.

🩺 Feeling unwell? If it’s not an emergency, visit 111.nhs.uk for advice.

πŸ“‹ For Local Charities & VCFSE Groups:
Our local third sector provides a vital lifeline to residents. We have emailed key contacts at all our member organisations with guidance, the mailer can be viewed here: https://bit.ly/43NzwIz
The Council strongly encourages all member groups to increase communications with service users and enact your relevant emergency protocols:

Implement Action Cards: Review the official VCFSE emergency action card for your service area here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/heat-health-alerting-system-guidance-for-voluntary-and-community-sectors

Proactive Monitoring: Reinforce hydration, cooling measures, and check-ins for high-risk or frail residents.

Cascade Water Safety: Please share key messages regarding water safety, cold-water shock, and drowning prevention with your networks.

(Note: While 3SG does not provide direct resident care, we are cascading this protocol at the request of B&NES Council to ensure our sector can move quickly to keep people safe).

Stay safe and look out for one another over the next 48 hours! πŸ’™

Small Charities. Big Impact. 🌟

This week marks the return of Small Charity Week, and we are kicking things off by celebrating the backbone of our local communities. Did you know that over 90% of the estimated 1,000 registered charities in Bath and North East Somerset are small charities (with an income under Β£1m)? Despite navigating big pressures - with over half of those who responded to our latest survey operating right at capacity - our small charity sector is a powerhouse. Our latest survey respondents supported an incredible 625,000 people across our region over the last year alone.

To say a massive thank you for the vital lifelines you all provide every single day, we are running a Small Charity Week Spotlight series!

First up in the spotlight is the wonderful Bath Gateway Out And About πŸ’œ

They do fantastic work supporting adults (18+) with learning disabilities through vibrant social & leisure activities - building skills, reducing isolation, and creating an inclusive community where everyone can thrive.

We are incredibly proud to have supported them through our Social Economy West project, helping them explore new partnerships, corporate support, and sustainable funding models to secure their long-term future. Check out the reel below to hear about their journey and their vision for growth!πŸŽ¬πŸ‘‡

Every year we love attending The Business Exchange South West’s Charity Conference and Expo! πŸ’« Huge hats off to Anita for organising another fantastic event.

This year’s theme was resilience. Our Director, Becky, sat on the breakfast panel to explore the future of charity in a changing world - discussing how we adapt, rebuild trust, and stay relevant during rapid change.

It was an honest, vital conversation that didn't shy away from the real challenges we are facing right now, including:

- Long-term funding struggles & extra financial pressures
- Rising demand & capacity issues
- Job insecurity & burnout
- A drop in volunteer numbers

From a 3SG perspective, Becky spoke about the importance of diversifying income (noting our Social Economy West programme and ThirdSpace hub). While our recent Members' Voice survey showed a continued reliance on grants, it also revealed that over three-quarters of respondents are actively seeking new income streams and trading activities.

The panel also dived into the changing sector landscape, using AI for good, and rebuilding trust through consistent, authentic communication and crisis readiness.

What do we need to pay attention to right now?
Financial resilience, AI literacy & governance, brand clarity, strategic collaboration, and building trust.

What gives us optimism for the future?
Despite the hurdles, our purpose and values are undeniable, and the demand and relevance of our sector is crystal clear. People still care deeply, and giving remains high in the UK. There are also exciting tech opportunities, a greater emphasis on collaboration, and potential new funding models on the horizon. Ultimately, the charity sector offers human connection, shared values, and meaningful impact - and it’s essential we protect this for civic society.

Over at the Expo, the rest of the 3SG team had some brilliant conversations with members and local businesses alike. There was a fantastic energy in the room all day, made even better by a thoroughly enjoyed lunch provided by the wonderful Bath Community Kitchen.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stall to chat! 🀝

🧁🍊To mark , David and Rob from the 3SG team spent today out and about in the Somer Valley delivering beautiful, bespoke cupcakes to some of our incredible local partners and members.

A massive thank you to the brilliant expert baker Ellie at Bath Community Kitchen for collaborating with us to bake these treats!

Our delivery route was a busy one:
πŸ“ First stop: Westfield Parish Council HQ to surprise the Somer Valley Rediscovered Steering Group.
πŸ“ Next up: SWALLOW Charity - South West Action for Learning & Living Our Way HQ, where members and staff took a quick cake break from their busy Tuesday activities.
πŸ“ Then over to Wild Plunge, our newest Change Maker as part of our Impact Alliance work.
πŸ“ Right next door, David caught up with the busy team at the Midsomer Norton Men’s Shed.
πŸ“ Final stop: The Old Printworks Arts in Radstock, where news of cake travelled fast and people flocked to the kitchen!

This is all part of our ongoing work with the Impact Alliance to connect our communities and help meet the vision: To make loneliness a stranger. ❀️
