Ripple Effect Bringing farmers in rural Africa together to learn more, grow more and sell more.🌱 We’re creating a wave of change in rural Africa. But we don’t stop there.

Rural Africa is rich with opportunity: with resourceful communities, and land from which food and futures can grow 🌱

But families face poverty that is extreme, cruel, and worst of all – unnecessary. The knowledge and skills needed for farmers to grow more and sell more is often lost. And now the climate crisis is threatening to push millions of people back into extreme poverty. It starts when we bring farmers together with community trainers and experienced peer farmers to share ideas and learn new skills. The focus is on practical approaches that help them grow more and sell more, so they can invest in their farms’ and families’ futures. The effect grows, because for every family we work with, 3 more families benefit too. Farmers share what they learn with their neighbours and communities. Then those farmers do the same. Soon thousands, then hundreds of thousands, experience the benefits, in communities where everyone is included, and everyone thrives. It’s efficient, effective and builds a momentum that spreads far beyond our programmes. Ripple Effect currently works in six African countries: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.

By the time a disaster strikes, some of the best opportunities to prepare may already have passed.

This , our Farm Systems and Sustainability Coordinator, Meshark Sikuku, shares why we need to think about disaster risk long before an emergency, especially for farming communities.

Natasha used to worry that the cloth she wore during her period might leak at school.

She and other girls at her school in Zambia have since received sanitary pads from the Zambia Rainbow Development Foundation (ZRDF). They’ve also learned how to make reusable pads themselves.

Natasha says she feels safer and more confident at school during her period. She can share what she’s learned with her family and community, too.

This International Day of the Girl, we’re listening to what girls say makes school difficult, and what helps.

For a closer look at Natasha’s story and what girls need to manage their periods at school, read Sofanit’s article in our latest LinkedIn post.

Christine once relied mainly on maize. Fertiliser was expensive. School fees were uncertain.

After joining Ripple Effect training, she started small. A keyhole garden. A fertility trench.

The results surprised her.

Her vegetables multiplied. She began selling traditional crops in high demand. She learned to compost instead of buying fertiliser. Her chickens now help pay school fees. Her cows provide milk. The donkeys are healthier and better cared for.

Her husband, Titus, who was once unsure, now supports her fully. Together, they train neighbours and share what they’ve learned.

From a small garden, a thriving farm grew.

This World Animal Day, we’re thinking about the animals that are part of everyday life for farming families.

In Woliso, Ethiopia, donkeys help people carry water, crops and other essentials. Caring for their welfare matters not only for the animals themselves, but for the people whose daily lives and livelihoods are closely connected to them.

It’s something colleagues from The Donkey Sanctuary saw firsthand during a recent visit to our Equine Welfare for Livelihood Development project, which they support.

They spent time with communities, saw the work underway and explored how better animal welfare can go hand in hand with stronger livelihoods.

There’s something special about seeing new knowledge take root.

Ergado grows coffee on his farm in Ethiopia. Through his work with Ripple Effect, he learned how to multiply his coffee plants and improve the way he grows them. He has plans to keep growing more.

And that knowledge doesn’t have to stay on one farm. Learning can be shared with the people around you, just as coffee itself is shared.

That feels especially fitting in Ethiopia, where sitting down for coffee is an important part of spending time together. Ergado told us how his family and neighbours come together over a cup.

Today, people will be drinking coffee all over the world. We’re celebrating the farmers behind it, and the knowledge that helps them keep growing.

One of our favourite things about working with businesses? Seeing the personality they bring to it.

There’s Riversdale Wagyu, where the birth of a new calf has become a reason to give. Cotteswold Dairy found inspiration in something as everyday as the facilities in their new building. And each of the partnerships in this carousel has its own story behind it.
They work because they mean something to the people and businesses involved.

Ryan, our Partnership & Philanthropy Manager here at Ripple Effect, has brought together a few of those stories in our latest blog, and they’re well worth a read.

A big thank you to Thrive London, Ilka Studio, Cotteswold Dairy and Riversdale Wagyu for finding your own way to be part of our Ripple Effect.

In refugee settlements across Uganda, people are putting new skills to work, earning an income and developing businesses of their own.

For Mupenzi, small-scale farming grew into a milling business and retail shop. His ambition now is to establish a vocational training centre where other young refugees can learn practical skills.

Stories like his show what can happen when people have the opportunity to build on their ideas and shape their own livelihoods.

Our latest blog takes us inside this work and introduces more of the entrepreneurs making it happen.

There’s much more to successful dairy farming than choosing the right cow.

Our team recently joined the Africa Jersey Forum in Zambia, sharing our own experiences and learning from farmers, technicians and organisations working across the dairy sector.

One example we loved hearing about was Savings to Buy a Cow, where women in Zambia pool their savings to help one another buy cows.

The team also visited the Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust, learning about calf rearing, locally available animal feeds and different ways of growing and preserving fodder.

It was a chance to look beyond the cow itself and think about everything a farmer needs around them for dairy farming to work well.
