You can now download the Kabale Community of Practice Evaluation Conference Report, which sets out the impact of the programme over the past three years.

The programme was designed to demonstrate positive outcomes when active teaching and learning methods are linked with behaviour management strategies based in safeguarding and child protection.

The Steering Group for the Community of Practice wishes to take the project and its achievements forward, to involve a further 10 schools, to allow the programme to continue its unique contribution to the regional and national development of education in Uganda.

Can you help us to contribute to our funding target of £15k?

The project has been an incredible achievement with many successes. We would love to be able to continue this work with new schools.

As part of our work on a new East Africa School Design Guide, our team held a two-day workshop at the School of Architecture in Kigali for final year architecture students.

They found this collaborative experience highly rewarding and have recorded their learning in our latest blog!

New blog: Cultural identity and the classroom

“Schools began with a man under a tree, who did not know he was a teacher, discussing his realization with a few, who did not know they were students.”

Louis Kahn

Last week we ran a two-day design workshop for final year architecture students at the University of Rwanda in Kigali.

New Blog: Where there is no architect

Meg Collin, Field Officer

Back in January, down by the shores of Lake Mutanda and in the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes I visited a local primary school. The headteacher, a friendly man with medium-level English (he had only completed 4 years of secondary education) showed us around. In each classroom, the children stood up to welcome us, sang a song and then we introduced ourselves. My husband, a doctor, got a good reception, after which the headteacher surveyed the class with: ‘and who wants to be a doctor?’ followed by forty hands shooting into the air. When it came to my turn: ‘I’m an architect.’ Silence. ‘I work in architecture.’ Confusion. ‘I design buildings?’ The headteacher’s face lit up: ‘Ahh, she is a designer. She works with buildings. Now, she is not a builder, so instead she does the decoration.’ And just like that, seven years of higher education were reduced to providing the ornamentation around window frames. The head continued: ‘Now, who wants to be a designer?’ Forty children leapt out their seats and, for a moment, the future of the medical profession looked significantly depleted...

Expanding Educational Opportunities

Since 2005, the Feilden Foundation has been partnering with schools and organisations in East Africa to design and build quality educational facilities with minimal use of resources. Now, we see a need to aid and equip the new generation of architects and designers in the region, and so have begun the research and development of an East African Schools Design Guide. To kick this off Trustee Peter Clegg recently completed a trip to Kampala and Kigali with field officer Meg Collin to visit exemplar schools and meet with project collaborators.
