🌍 "Ecocivilization": Making a World that Works for All
with Jeremy Lent
📅 Friday 26 June
and online 7:30pm
https://www.brlsi.org/whatson/ecocivilization-making-a-world-that-works-for-all/

As climate breakdown, inequality, and social fragmentation accelerate, what would it take to create a civilisation that truly works for people and planet?
Join acclaimed author and thinker Jeremy Lent for an exploration of his new book, Ecocivilization: Making a World that Works for All. Exploring a practical vision of a future rooted in ecological principles, democratic participation, human wellbeing, and our deep interconnectedness with the living world.

This event builds on the ideas developed in Lent's award-winning earlier books. In The Patterning Instinct, he traced how different cultures throughout history have created meaning and how those underlying worldviews continue to shape our societies today. He argues that today's ecological and social crises are not inevitable, but arise from cultural patterns that can be transformed.

His later book, The Web of Meaning, explored how insights from science and traditional wisdom can help us cultivate a worldview of interconnectedness and flourishing.
Now, in Ecocivilization, Lent takes the next step: translating those ideas into a practical roadmap for a regenerative future, where technology serves communities, democracy empowers citizens, businesses support life, and nature's rights are protected.
An important evening for anyone interested in sustainability, systems change, economics, ecology, politics, or the future of humanity.

📷 Two charming papier-mâché toys with nodding heads, dating from the nineteenth century. Behind them, six wax figures of Chinese sages and devils with movable limbs.

Toys like these offer a rare glimpse into the lives of Chinese children of that time. While many children spent their days helping with household tasks, farming, or family businesses, they also found time for play. Simple handmade toys, puppets, kites, spinning tops and figures such as these were popular sources of entertainment. Characters drawn from folklore, legends and traditional beliefs helped children learn stories, values and cultural traditions while they played.

Part of Worlds Apart: Rare Early Photographs of China & Bath at BRLSI, this free exhibition explores the origins of photography and the fascinating visual parallels between Bath and China in the nineteenth century.
