What would make B&NES a better place to grow older?

More than 1,300 older residents shared their experiences with us. Their views helped shape our first State of Ageing report and continue to guide our work.

This International Day of Older People, thank you to everyone who has contributed, including Older People’s Voice members bringing local experiences into conversations about planning, dementia support and health services.

From what’s on our doorstep to how we get around, these everyday things matter.

💙 Dementia Awareness Event in Paulton

Do you, or someone you know, need information or support around dementia?

Come along to Paulton Community Hospital on **Wednesday 30 September** and meet local organisations offering advice, information and support.

Whether you’re living with dementia, supporting someone, or work with people affected by dementia, everyone is welcome.

“My life has completely opened up since I’ve had a befriender.”

Stacey is 103. Volunteer Ivor has been visiting him for just over a year, and there’s usually plenty to talk about: cricket, football and what’s been on the telly.

Their weekly visits have become something they both look forward to.

And Stacey’s advice to anyone thinking about volunteering?

“Just do it. You won’t regret it.”

📝 1 in 3 people will be affected by dementia in their lifetime, with 1 in 14 people - over the age of 65 - currently living with the condition.

On Wednesday 30th September, an information event will be held at Paulton Community Hospital, from 10am - 2pm, for anyone looking for advice and support.

Open to professionals, people living with dementia, family and friends.

What should good care at home look and feel like?

The next Older People’s Voice event is a chance to have your say on care at home in B&NES, as the Council plans future care and support.

We’ll also hear more about dementia care in residential settings and how the Council works with care home providers and people who arrange or fund their own care.

You don’t need to be an expert. Come along, share your views or simply listen.

**Hot weather: check in on someone older**

With very high temperatures expected, please check in on older relatives, friends and neighbours, especially those who live alone or have health conditions.

A quick call, text or knock on the door can make a real difference.

Ask if they:
☀️ Have enough food and drinks at home
☀️ Are keeping curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day
☀️ Can avoid going out in the strongest sun
☀️ Have medication and prescriptions sorted
☀️ Are feeling dizzy, confused, sick or unusually tired

Small actions can help people stay safe in the heat.
