Age UK Bath & North East Somerset

Age UK Bath & North East Somerset Age UK B&NES is a local independent charity that supports around 12,000 older people, their families and carers every year.

Age UK B&NES is a local, independent charity serving local people. Whilst we are part of the Age UK family, all the money we raise here is spent here. We rely on the generosity of the local community, funders, businesses and people just like you to help us keep these services running in Bath & North East Somerset.

💛 “Age doesn’t matter, put us together and we can chat about anything.”

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the friendships and connections that grow through volunteering. Because befriending is not one-way. It is conversation, connection and learning from each other.

Charity said:
“Grace has given me a different perspective on things. She has shown me that though you may be older in years, you don’t have to be that way in spirit. She’s taught me how valuable continued learning is, and how important it is to get out each day for fresh air. I hope our weekly conversations continue to blossom into a friendship for a long time to come. If we can be anything, it’s nice to be kind.”

To all our Age UK Bath & North East Somerset volunteers, thank you. We could not do what we do without you.

We were pleased to be at The Chocolate Quarter in Keynsham this week for a dementia support drop-in, as part of Dementia Action Week. đź’™

Alongside Alzheimer’s Society the Community Wellbeing Hub and other brilliant local organisations, we spoke with people affected by dementia, carers, families and professionals sharing information, answering questions and helping people find local support.

Dementia can feel overwhelming, but no one should have to navigate it alone.

This week is also an important chance to listen, as B&NES Council develops its new five-year Dementia Strategy. Local experiences really matter in shaping what support looks like for the future.

Thank you to The Chocolate Quarter for hosting, and to everyone who came along or stopped for a chat. Community Wellbeing Hub Alzheimer's Society ReMind UK Bath & North East Somerset Council HCRG Care Group St Monica Trust

Where can people use the loo in your local area?

It’s a simple question, but it really matters. Please help get better toilets by filling in a short survey.

For many people, knowing where they can use a toilet can make a big difference to whether they feel confident going out and about.

The Older People’s Voice is helping to explore a Community Toilet Scheme for Bath & North East Somerset.

The idea is simple: local businesses and community organisations could make their toilets available for public use, without people needing to buy anything.

We’re asking local people to help us build a clearer picture of:

where toilets are already available
where there are gaps
which cafés, shops, libraries, halls, churches, hotels or community buildings might be good to approach
how people would want to find out about the scheme

This could make a real difference for older people, disabled people, carers, parents with young children, and people with health conditions as well as helping make our communities more welcoming for everyone.

If you can, please take a few minutes to fill in the short survey here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf9864PhatfdgjrtH--MmQA8Vw0QbxyLaC_NinCmIlyKxV9eg/viewform

No single organisation can create a place where people age well on its own — it has to be done together.

That was the message at our **State of Ageing Launch** at the Guildhall last week.

Yes, we launched a report. But more than that, we brought together people and organisations from across Bath & North East Somerset who all care about making later life better.

One of the most important parts of the event was the focus on **pledges ** practical commitments from organisations to respond to the issues older people have told us matter most. Because listening matters, but action matters too.

A huge thank you to Bath & North East Somerset Council Citizens Advice - Bath and North East Somerset University of Bath St John's Foundation Est. 1174 Older People's Voice and Cafe Concerts and 3SG along with the many other partners, contributors and supporters who helped make the event what it was.

This feels like the start of the next chapter, and we’d love to see more organisations step forward, think about what they can influence, and make a commitment that helps improve life for older people in B&NES.

A big thank you to everyone who joined our Older People’s Voice conversation last week.

It was a really thoughtful and positive discussion about GP services locally. Many people said they left feeling better informed about how general practice works and the pressures surgeries are under.

A huge thank you to BEMS+, Nick, 3SG, Healthwatch, and Age UK B&NES for sharing their insights, and to Manvers Street Baptist Church for hosting us so warmly.

We were also really pleased to welcome some new members to Older People’s Voice.

If you’d like to hear about future conversations and opportunities to get involved, you can sign up to the newsletter by emailing us: [email protected]
