Tomorrow is International Day to End Fistula.

Medina, 28, lived with obstetric fistula for four years. From her rural home in Guji, Oromia, it was difficult to reach healthcare, and she was unaware that this devastating childbirth injury could be treated. She was left to live with incontinence, pain and isolation.

Everything changed when Medina met Asnakech, a Safe Motherhood Ambassador (SMA) with our partner Healing Hands of Joy. SMAs work to prevent obstetric fistula and help women access treatment and with rehabilitation. They also assist with training new SMAs. Through Asnakech and the support of the SMA programme, Medina could receive free treatment and the care she needed.

The best part, Medina is now a Safe Motherhood Ambassador herself, continuing the chain of women supporting women through obstetric fistula.

A gift today can help end obstetric fistula tomorrow - https://ethiopiaid.org.uk/obstetric-fistula-in-ethiopia/

Today is International Day of the Midwife, and what better day to kick off Maternal May at Ethiopiaid.

We’re celebrating the wonderful midwives and traditional birth attendants across Ethiopia. They go above and beyond, working through the night, often travelling across remote areas on foot, to deliver vital antenatal and postnatal care.

Thank you for making this life-saving work possible.

Older people living in poverty are some of the most marginalised and vulnerable people in Ethiopia. Without an income of their own, or a state pension to rely on, many are forced to beg on the streets.

Sir Alec admired the straightforward, direct support our partner SCWOP (Support for Children, Women and Older People) provides for older people who have nowhere else to turn.

Here’s how SCWOP’s team helps to transform lives:
💛Monthly pension for older people living in extreme poverty in Addis Ababa
💛Home visits for practical, emotional and healthcare support
💛Extra support for those caring for orphaned grandchildren
💛Income generation activities for independent living

Your donation to The Lifetime Fund will help to continue the steady, compassionate work of our partners, like SCWOP.

Hope Enterprises is one of our earliest partnerships. It started by providing nutritious food to people who had nowhere else to turn in Addis Ababa. It has now grown to provide so much more...

💛Free primary and secondary education for children who would otherwise not be able to afford it
💛Uniforms and books
💛Vocational programmes
💛Greater opportunities for an independent income

All while still staying true to its beginnings and, with your support, providing 200 children a daily meal to help them learn and stay healthy.

Sir Alec knew that without this vital intervention, many of these children and young adults would go unnoticed and unsupported.

You can help to continue Sir Alec’s legacy and make a donation to The Lifetime Fund to continue to champion people who are too often unseen, unheard and forgotten.

Melkam Fasika to all those celebrating Easter today! 🌟

The beginning of the Holy Week is marked with the Palm Sunday procession, just like this one the staff at Atsede Clinic attended.

Today marks the end of a 55 day fast. Across the country, communities will come together to celebrate with candlelit processions, traditional feasting, an exchange of gifts and acts of kindness.

You can read our ‘Easter in Ethiopia’ blog to find out more about local Ethiopian Orthodox traditions.

Conditions that are recognised and treated early here in the UK, go unseen in Ethiopia. For children living with disabilities in rural Ethiopia, this often means a lifetime of isolation, stigma and limited opportunities.

The Lifetime Fund is supporting our partner Cheshire Ethiopia to continue their vital work providing specialist care to children living with disabilities.

Here’s how Cheshire Ethiopia is transforming lives:
💛Raising awareness within communities, to improve inclusion and accessibility.
💛Providing people with mobility aids, as well as repair services.
💛Offering surgery, physiotherapy and rehabilitation for children and adults.
💛Helping children to continue their education while being treated.

With your donation to The Lifetime Fund, our partners in Ethiopia can continue to support those who are too often unseen, unheard and forgotten.

Ethiopiaid is proud to be launching The Lifetime Fund in memory of our founder, Sir Alec Reed CBE.

In Ethiopia, it is all too easy to be invisible. But with your support, we can change that.

The Lifetime Fund has been created to support our partners who work with people who are far too often unseen, unheard and forgotten.

A gift to The Lifetime Fund today will help:

💚A child who would otherwise go hungry receive a nutritious breakfast and support to attend school

💛Provide care for older people living in extreme poverty

💜Support people with disabilities to live safely and independently

Our goal is BOLD: to raise £250,000 in 2026 for The Lifetime Fund to help ensure no one is forgotten; not today, not tomorrow, and not for decades to come.

Will you help to transform lives? Give a gift to The Lifetime Fund today: https://ethiopiaid.org.uk/the-lifetime-fund/

This Mothering Sunday, we want to celebrate the incredible women who shape our lives and the midwives who are on hand to support mothers to be in the vulnerable hours around childbirth.🌷

Zewdu was in labour for just over an hour at Atsede Clinic, one of our Maternal Health partners. Following the delivery of her baby daughter, Asha, Zewdu experienced complications and moderate bleeding. The midwife on hand quickly responded and safely provided the medical care Zewdu needed.

Zewdu and her daughter Asha remain happy and healthy, and thankful for the midwife’s quick action.

Thank you for your continued support and helping ensure safe births in Ethiopia. 🌻

Here’s to ensuring no woman is left behind this International Women’s Day. ❤️

The Midwives on the Move (MoM) programme is a part of Atsede Clinic’s work in the rural Gurage Zone. They make sure mothers, and mothers to be, living in remote areas still receive the essential maternal health care they need.

In 2025...
❤️406 women were visited by a MoM midwife with antenatal and postnatal care
❤️380 women and girls were reached through maternal and sexual health education and awareness
❤️90 births were attended by midwives

You can help ensure no woman is left behind by donating this International Women’s Day - https://ethiopiaid.org.uk/how-we-help/maternal-health/
