🎉 **The new Making Place website is live!**

The Making Place uses music, podcasting, audio and creative media to give young people a space to learn real skills, express themselves and make work they can genuinely feel proud of.

Our workshops are built around small groups, professional equipment and meaningful youth work, creating a supportive environment for young people who may not always thrive in more traditional settings.

The new website explains more about what we do, the thinking behind The Making Place and the workshops we are developing in Bath.

🎙️ The Podcast Lab is coming this August!

A two day, hands-on workshop for young people aged 11–15 who want to experience what it is like to create a real video podcast.
Across the two days, participants will work together to:

🎥 Plan and record a video podcast
🎙️ Use professional microphones, cameras and lighting
💻 Edit using industry-standard software
🎵 Add music, titles and sound effects
📁 Take home a copy of the finished podcast

No previous experience is needed, and all equipment is provided. The group is limited to just five young people, allowing everyone plenty of time to get involved, try different roles and receive individual support.

📅 Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 August 2026
🕥 10:30am–2:30pm each day
📍 Riverside Youth Hub, York Mews, Bath, BA1 8AE
💷 £75 per place

🎙️ At The Making Place, we believe young people deserve access to the same creative tools and experiences as any professional artist.

We're always incredibly proud to show off young peoples work and show what's possible within the right environment.

The Making Place allows young people learn real recording, performance and production skills in a supportive, youth work-led environment. Whether they're building confidence behind a microphone, discovering a love of music production or simply finding a place where they feel they belong, every session is about helping them grow through creativity.

All instruments (including vocals) were played by one young person!

Creative opportunities for young people shouldn’t depend on whether their family can afford lessons, whether their school still offers music or drama, or whether they happen to live in the “right” postcode.

Since 2010, arts GCSE entries have fallen by 42%. In England, local authority funding for youth services has fallen by 76% in real terms since 2010/11.

That means fewer music rooms. Fewer youth clubs. Fewer chances to try things. Fewer safe spaces where young people can explore who they are and what they’re good at.

The Making Place is about rebuilding a small part of that locally.

Real equipment. Small groups. Skilled adults. A safe space to make music, record, film, podcast, experiment and create something they’re proud of.

Creative opportunities shouldn’t only be available to those who can afford them.

This week at The Making Place, the young people have been creating their own podcast “drops” - short sound clips used in radio and podcasting.

They recorded their own voices, experimented with sound effects, learnt how to trim and clean up audio, and then triggered their clips using a MIDI pad ready for the podcast filming next week.

It was a brilliant session for building confidence, creativity and real-world audio production skills. Turning their own voices and ideas into something they can use in a finished project.

Pilot completed 🎧

Over the last 6 weeks, The Making Place has been running its first small-group creative audio pilot at Riverside Youth Hub.

The pilot has helped us learn a lot:

Small groups work best - this is something the young people were passionate about will continue to be part of our structure going forward.

Two-hour sessions felt right for our group who were not in mainstream education.

Podcasting was a brilliant way in for young people who found music production a bit intimidating at first (the podcasts were also highly entertaining!)

The right environment can help young people build confidence, communicate, create, and try something new.

A huge thank you to the young people and families who took part in this first block. Their feedback will help shape what The Making Place becomes next.

More sessions are on the way this week, with even more being planned for the future, including creative audio, podcasting, music production, mentoring-style support and summer workshops!

The Making Place is still at an early stage, but this pilot has shown there is a real need for safe, youth-work-led creative spaces where young people can make things, explore ideas and be heard.

**Because we work with young people, we take privacy seriously, so you won’t always get inside the sessions on social media. The work matters, but so does making sure young people feel safe and in control of how they are represented

Sessions are well under way at The Making Place 🎶

It’s been brilliant seeing young people getting hands-on in the studio making music, trying out equipment, sharing ideas and building confidence through creating.

This is just the beginning. We’ll be sharing more from the sessions soon, along with future opportunities to get involved.

The studio is a big part of The Making Place.

Delivered from Riverside Youth hub, Bath, I wanted young people to have access to a real creative environment.Somewhere that feels exciting and professional, but still relaxed, supportive and not intimidating.

It’s a space to make music, try ideas, build confidence and create without pressure.

This is what we wanted The Making Place to feel like.
