The butterfly season this year witnessed 28 species on the plateau as identified by Mark Bagott, including this Clouded Yellow butterfly. This species migrates from southern Europe and North Africa to the UK. The recording-breaking heat of 2026 delivered the second-best British butterfly season of the past 16 years according to the Big Butterfly Count 2026 and it is great to see them on the South Stoke plateau. Next year the count takes place between 9th July and 1st August. Let’s hope that the HFT proposals if adopted will leave us with some butterflies to count. These are the species recorded: Small Skipper,Large Skipper, Dingy Skipper, Clouded Yellow, Brimstone, Large White, Small White, Green-veined White, Orange-tip, White-letter Hairstreak, Holly Blue, Brown Argus, Common Blue, Small Copper, Marsh Fritillary, Silver-washed Fritillary, Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Comma, Marbled White, Speckled Wood, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Ringlet, Small Heath, Dark green fritillary Big Butterfly Month photo by Ned Garnett

The start of a new season with some much needed rain on the plateau. It still looks inviting as Jenny John’s photo suggests so get the wellies on and take a look - it is definitely worth saving. Cotswolds National Landscape
