Venue update for the session on the 13th May: ‘Building Solidarity in a Disabling World’ and an accessibility statement
The session on 13th May ‘Building solidarity in a disabling world’ will be held at The Bell (not Percy Community Centre as originally advertised). This is a result of conversations with the convenors of the session.
The priority for the session is to engage with activists who do not normally think about disability politics. The reality is that more people will come if it takes place in the venue they are used to.
We are aware that this means that as usual non-disabled people’s comfort takes higher priority than disabled people’s access. But for this session we feel the priority should be engaging with the maximum number of non-disabled people.
We are really sorry if BICEP’s sessions are inaccessible to you. We have very limited funds and are looking for suitable accessible venues.
Please let us know if anyone has suggestions for future sessions.
A statement on the accessibility of BICEP
BICEP takes place in the backroom of The Bell Inn. There are three small steps up to the room, but a ramp is available. However, access via the garden itself is too steep to be accessible for wheelchair users unaided.
There are no steps from the backroom to the toilet but the corridor is slightly narrow and there are no grab bars or alarm cord.
BICEP can be busy and noisy. We will ensure everyone who needs a seat gets one and we have a mic set up to ensure everyone can hear the person speaking.
We are also aware of the session being an awkward time for those with caring responsibilities and apologise to anyone who can’t make it.
Please contact us if you have any accessibility needs and we’ll try our best to arrange a solution.
