The sight of beavers in our wetlands is very exciting.

We have lost a staggering 75% of our wetlands in the UK, just in the last 300 years. More than 10% of our wetland species are threatened with extinction, and two thirds are in decline. With wetlands providing a home for 40% of the world’s species, this decline threatens ecological collapse if we don’t urgently respond.mWetlands not only help us face the biodiversity crisis, but they are also powerhouses in locking in carbon, as well as clearing up pollution both in the air, and in the water.

We are offering one more hedge laying course near Newtown, Powys on 31st October. This is FREE for those working in agriculture, including agricultural students, but hobbyists, gardeners etc. are very welcome for a donation of £50 (other students £25). Tools are provided.
This is a popular course and our previous courses in this area have been fully booked.

If you live near Thatcham, Berks, pop down to this lovely little wood for a few hours on Thursday, 22nd or Friday, 23rd October and help us get rid of the invasive rhododendrons that are trying to take it over.
Rhodo bashing is very satisfying, especially when you know you are helping to increase biodiversity.

A big thank you to our volunteers, both regular and new, who joined us at High Wood, Liskeard on a lovely sunny day to clear an area of gorse. It was particularly exciting when we were able to uncover some tiny oak saplings, giving them a much better chance of survival.
We also felled and ring barked some smaller trees from an area in need of thinning. Sunlight will now reach into this area, encouraging other plants to grow, and generally improving biodiversity here.
The wood from these trees will be used to make some steps near the historic tunnel on our next volunteer day.

It's the beginning of the tree planting season and we want to plant as many trees as possible. We have the time, we have the volunteers, but although we get some funding it's not enough for all we would like to do.
We would be grateful for any donation, either as a one-off or as a regular donation.

Protect Earth bought this land near Warleigh, Bath in January to create a new nature reserve, developing much needed wetlands, grasslands and woodlands on the banks of the River Avon.

A wonderful day at Warleigh Nature Reserve with some new, and not so new, volunteers. They came to coppice, but also made a start on building some steps for us. Most have joined our 'task force' and are keen to volunteer again soon.

When invasive rhododendrons get into a woodland they grow in dense thickets, block sunlight and turn the soil acidic, killing off other plants and reducing biodiversity.
We'll be visiting a small woodland at Greenham near Newbury on 22nd and 23rd October to do battle with some rhododendrons there. You can help your local environment by coming and lending a hand if you live nearby. Jobs vary from cutting back small branches to sawing through larger trunks or even piling up branches to be dealt with later.
No experience needed, we provide the tools, and it's always a fun day out with like-minded people.
