At last weekend’s many people asked how I make the black-and-white striped vessels. Here’s a sneak preview into how they look after glazing but before the glaze firing. It’s fascinating how this flat graphic aspect becomes so much more three-dimensional once they’re glazed.

🔎 The devil is in the details!

“Kat took my slightly vague idea and a handful of fairly unhelpful reference photos, and somehow turned them into exactly what I had imagined, but better. The whole process felt really thoughtful and collaborative, and she completely understood what I was hoping to create for my friend. She captured all the little details so beautifully and made something that feels genuinely personal. I couldn’t be happier with it.” Harry

There’s a running joke on Instagram: why spend £30 on a bowl from IKEA when you can spend £3000 making it yourself?

Some days it feels that way but, if it’s not too clichéd, the process of making is the real joy and the finished product is a legacy of that joy. This weekend the palpable excitement and interest people showed in the act of making spoke to me very powerfully.

I love what good the information age has brought us as much as anybody, but nurturing our hands and eyes and the capacity to look and really see through our own eyes are valuable activities in themselves. So yes, making (and buying) pots can be more expensive than shopping in the High Street, but the rewards run rich and deep and long. I made so many connections with people around individual parts this weekend, it was very moving. I’m so grateful to have found this way of being, a balancing antidote to fast consuming culture, in which I indulge just as much as the next person!

Finally, thank you to all who came, and congratulations to all the other artists at the festival this weekend. I know we all make very different things but are united in that commitment to using our hands.

Getting ready for the second day of in Bath. Come and see, touch, enjoy some delicious pots for food and flowers. Yesterday we got as many compliments for the garden as we did for the pots and had lots of lovely conversations and connections. One of the reasons I chose to do this open Studio was to feel part of a community and that has definitely happened even after day only one day. So do – come along and say hello it would be lovely to meet you. Demonstrations at 12 & 3.
