Reconnect is a group of student social entrepreneurs. Our mission is to create a business to empower, support and advocate for young people with autism on their journey in and into employment. We progress our mission via our affiliation with the University of Bath and Enactus UK.

We believe that no person should ever lose their opportunities due to the way they were born. Job interviews are intimidating, we know that. Therefore, we aim to offer a safe space for autistic people to practice, to try out questions and answers, and receive feedbacks and friendly guidance. Starting by supporting young autistic people around Bath, we are planning to organise workshops over Microsoft teams with the career’s service and the autism social group at the University of Bath. We aim to provide more 1-1 employability skills sessions through a mock group assessment centre.

There are many benefits of hiring autistic employees. They have unique ways of thinking and can often give solutions that are out of the box. They have intense focus and can be very productive. They pay great attention to details and can easily spot mistakes. And the list goes on. However, autistic individuals have lots of struggle in doing interviews. Job interviews tend to use open and indirect questions, which autistic people find it hard to interpret the intention of the interviewer. They are not good at impression management and often present themselves in a less favourable way.

Neurodiversity is about recognising that our brains function differently. There are neurological variances between each of us, and such difference should be recognised and respected just like any other human variations. There are no “abnormal” races, there are no “standard” cultures. Just natural variations, and so as the concept .
