🛒 THE VERY SCIENTIFIC MATHEMATICS OF THE WEEKLY FOOD SHOP
There is a particular kind of optimism involved in walking into a supermarket these days.
You go in for “a few bits.”
You leave £63 poorer, clutching two carrier bags and wondering whether you accidentally bought a small appliance.
You check the receipt.
Nope.
Cheese. It was mostly cheese. 🧀
We joke about it because, frankly, sometimes you have to.
But behind the memes about the price of butter, the tactical meal planning and standing in aisle four wondering whether anyone really needs branded ketchup, there’s something that isn’t quite so funny.
For some households, the food shop isn’t just expensive.
It’s frightening.
It’s checking your bank balance before you get to the till.
It’s putting something back because the total is creeping too high.
It’s making sure the children have what they need and quietly deciding you’ll “just have something later.”
It’s becoming exceptionally creative with half a bag of pasta, one onion and a tin of tomatoes.
And sometimes it’s looking at a food larder post on Facebook and thinking:
“We’re not struggling enough for that.”
“Other people need it more.”
“We’ll manage.”
Here’s the thing.
There isn’t a competition.
There is no Great British Struggle-Off where somebody arrives with a clipboard and awards food according to who has had the worst month.
At Withamside Community Food Larder, we’re simply neighbours helping neighbours.
Sometimes life is comfortable.
Sometimes life throws the boiler, the car, the school shoes, an unexpected bill and a £6 block of cheese at you in the same week.
And when it does, community should be something you can lean on.
So if putting food on the table has become harder than it used to be, please don’t wait until the cupboards are completely empty before deciding you’re “allowed” to ask for help.
Come and see us.
Take what will help.
Have a cuppa if you’d like one.
Have a chat if you fancy it.
Or collect what you need, say hello and head straight home.
No interrogation.
No judgement.
No gold medal required for struggling. 🏅
Just people looking after people.
Because perhaps the question shouldn’t be:
“Do I need help badly enough?”
Perhaps it should simply be:
“Would a little help make this week easier?”
If the answer is yes, that’s enough. 💚

You never know which friend, colleague, parent at the school gates or neighbour might read it and quietly think:
“Actually… maybe I could go.” 💚
