In most sports, age eventually catches up with you. In chess, it can become your greatest strength.
That is the spirit of the European Senior Chess Championship, a tournament organised by the European Chess Union since 2001. Every year, some of Europeโs most experienced players(grandmasters, former national champions, respected coaches, and lifelong chess lovers aged 50 and over) gather to prove that competitive fire does not fade with time.
The championship has crowned some of senior chessโs biggest names, including John Nunn, Zurab Sturua, and Jean-Marc Degraeve. For many participants, it is more than a fight for medals. It is a chance to stay connected to the game they have devoted their lives to, test themselves against elite opposition, and show that experience still matters.
This year, the story continues in Acqui Terme, Italy, where nearly 250 players from 34 countries are preparing to battle across the board. Among them are defending champions, seasoned grandmasters, and chess legends whose careers span decades.
And thereโs another reason for us to follow the action closely. One of the competitors will be Grandmaster Danny Gormally, who will be sharing stories, insights, and behind-the-scenes moments from the tournament. Throughout the event, weโll be surprising our members with exclusive updates directly from the playing hall, bringing you closer to the drama, personalities, and battles unfolding on the board.
As the clocks are about to start ticking, one thing is certain: while the players may be seniors, the competition promises to be as fierce as ever. In chess, wisdom never retires ๐
