For me, the decision to volunteer isn't just about what we're doing today; it’s deeply rooted in a legacy that goes back thirty years. When I think about my 'why,' my mind immediately goes to my old Scout Master.
The impact he had on my life during those formative years was profound—he instilled a sense of adventure, community, and confidence that has stayed with me ever since. I was incredibly moved when he gifted me his wooden beads. Wearing them now is a constant, physical reminder of the kind of leader I strive to be. It made me realize that I stepped into this role because I want to be that same steady, positive influence for the next generation.
That desire to pass the torch is a big part of what drove me to help get the 24th Basingstoke Squirrels off the ground. Having always been passionate about early years development, I know firsthand how crucial these foundational moments are for young children. To be able to bring the magic of Scouting to this specific age group is incredibly rewarding.
Seeing how far our drey has come, especially as we just celebrated our first anniversary, validates every hour put into the planning and organizing. Watching these kids learn new skills, build friendships, and gain independence is an absolute privilege. Whether we are running around at a weekly meeting or gearing up for a big adventure like our upcoming group camp at Ferny Crofts, I get to watch them light up with the exact same excitement I had thirty years ago.
Ultimately, I volunteer because I want to keep that cycle going. I was given a great gift as a young Scout, and leading this drey is my way of paying it forward—ensuring that these kids have the same opportunities to grow, explore, and build memories that will last them a lifetime.
