Pelican Cancer Foundation

Pelican Cancer Foundation Pelican is dedicated to helping those with cancer live well for longer.

We achieve this by supporting medical research and education to improve surgery for bowel cancer and its associated secondary disease, particularly in the liver. "In our view all surgeons should come and see the experts work at Pelican [โ€ฆ.] the bottom line is theyโ€™ll save lives as a result." Professor Alex Deutsch

Pelican Cancer Foundation has a world-wide reputation as a centre of excellence and

for bringing together cancer surgeons and teams to encourage learning, collaboration and discussion, and for driving improvements in cancer care. However, with no NHS funding, we rely on support from our local community to continue our vital research. Yesterday, the Pelican Team returned to London to deliver our 16th Optimising Re**al Cancer Outcomes (OReCO) workshop as part of the OReCO National Education Programme.

OReCO is a national initiative bringing together multidisciplinary healthcare professionals from across the UK to share best practice, strengthen clinical decision-making, and improve outcomes for patients with re**al cancer.

Through expert-led sessions, case discussions, and collaborative learning, the programme supports continued excellence in colore**al cancer treatment and care.

In total, 130 clinicians attended the OReCO London workshop. 18 faculty members delivered presentations to 112 clinicians from 25 hospitals across the London region for a valuable day of education, discussion, networking, and shared learning.

Pelican OReCO aims to:
โ€ข Raise awareness of best practice in re**al cancer management
โ€ข Support more consistent MDT processes across hospitals
โ€ข Ensure patients receive the right treatment, at the right time, in the right place

As our fifth national programme (2024โ€“2026), OReCO will deliver 20 one-day workshops, engaging 2,000 clinicians across 120 hospitals to help improve outcomes and quality of life for bowel cancer patients.

As we step into a new month and summer approaches, itโ€™s the perfect time to make a meaningful impact.

Why not take on a fundraising challenge for the Pelican Cancer Foundation and help raise vital funds. Our vision is simple but powerful: to help people with bowel cancer live well for longer.

Itโ€™s thanks to the dedication of fundraisers and supporters that this work continues to make a real difference.

So far this year, we have run two Optimising Re**al Cancer Outcomes (OReCO) workshops in Birmingham and Manchester. We have also delivered a Bowel Cancer Screening course in February and a Understanding and Managing the Late Effects of Bowel Cancer Surgery workshop in April.

Through our research and education programmes, Pelican brings together cancer specialists from across the UK and internationally to advance their skills and understanding in the management of re**al cancer.

Understanding and Managing the Late Effects of Bowel Cancer Surgery Workshop | 29 April 2026

Today we welcomed clinicians to Understanding and Managing the Late Effects of Bowel Cancer Surgery, an important educational workshop focused on improving care for patients living with the long-term consequences of bowel cancer treatment.

Building on the success of our 2025 Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) Workshop, this yearโ€™s event expanded the discussion to explore the wider range of late effects experienced by both re**al and colon cancer patients.

Patients treated for bowel cancer can experience significant long-term complications after surgery. One of the most recognised is Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS), which may include increased bowel frequency, urgency and, in severe cases, debilitating incontinence. Up to 80% of patients with low re**al cancer are affected, and for some these symptoms can have a lifelong impact on quality of life.

Throughout the day, clinicians explored why management of these late effects can be challenging and discussed ways to improve care through:
โ€ข Better pre-operative counselling
โ€ข Improved recognition of symptoms
โ€ข Open conversations about sensitive issues such as sexual dysfunction
โ€ข Greater clarity around optimal management strategies

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a day of learning, collaboration and shared commitment to improving outcomes for bowel cancer patients.

Yesterday we experienced a small, contained issue with our email system, during which some emails were sent from Pelican accounts without authorisation. We identified this quickly and have since secured the account and resolved the issue. Importantly, no financial details were accessed or affected at any point.

If you received an email from a Pelican account asking you to VIEW/LETTER please do not open and delete immediately.

We apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Kind regards,

The Pelican Team

Following the success of our 2025 Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) Workshop, the 2026 event will expand its scope to explore the wider range of late effects experienced by both re**al and colon cancer patients.

Patients treated for bowel cancer may experience significant long-term complications after surgery. One of the most recognised is Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) - a group of symptoms that can occur after re**al cancer surgery, including increased bowel frequency, urgency, and in severe cases, debilitating incontinence. These symptoms can also occur, to a lesser extent, after colon cancer surgery.

Up to 80% of patients with low re**al cancer experience LARS. While some see improvement over time, others live with lifelong bowel dysfunction, which can have a profound impact on quality of life.

Despite its prevalence, the management of these late effects is often suboptimal. Contributing factors may include:
โ€ข Limited pre-operative counselling
โ€ข Under-recognition of symptoms
โ€ข Challenges discussing sensitive issues such as sexual dysfunction
โ€ข Uncertainty around optimal management strategies

This workshop aims to provide clinicians with greater understanding, practical tools, and multidisciplinary perspectives to better support patients living with the long-term consequences of bowel cancer treatment.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’™

Early detection can make a huge difference.

Screening helps identify bowel cancer before symptoms appear, and in some cases can prevent it altogether.

If you receive a screening invitation, donโ€™t ignore it. It could save your life.
Bowel Cancer screening uses a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) - It looks for tiny traces of blood in your poo, which can be a sign of bowel cancer.

When found early, bowel cancer is often treatable and curable, and surgery remains one of the most effective treatments.

Raising awareness helps more people recognise the signs and symptoms, understand their risk, and take action through screening and healthy lifestyle choices. When detected early, bowel cancer is highly treatable - and screening can even help prevent it.

Myth: Bowel cancer only affects older people.
Fact: While risk increases with age, bowel cancer can affect younger adults too.

Knowing the symptoms and seeking advice early is important for everyone.
Common symptoms to be aware of include:
โ€ข Persistent changes in bowel habits
โ€ข Blood in your stool
โ€ข Unexplained weight loss
โ€ข Ongoing abdominal pain or discomfort
โ€ข Extreme fatigue without a clear reason
If you notice any symptoms that persist for several weeks, itโ€™s important to speak to your GP. Screening programmes and early testing save lives.
