Sustainable Basingstoke

Sustainable Basingstoke How our borough helps the environment is up to us. Together, we can go even more green. However there may be exceptions to this at times.

Aiming to create an even greener Basingstoke and Deane, the Sustainable Basingstoke page publishes and shares appropriate content. This includes but is not limited to content that:
- gives advice for communities to make more sustainable choices in how they live;
- signposts to grants and other support to help people live more sustainably;
- celebrates green action by communities and organ

isations and encourages people to get involved;
- informs communities about the latest news on ‘green’ issues to prompt discussions;
- encourages people to have their say on plans and policies; and,
- publicises other ways for people to stay up to date with news from Sustainable Basingstoke, for example encouraging people to sign up to its newsletter. In the interest of remaining apolitical, this page takes every effort to avoid publishing or sharing content that is or might be seen to be political in nature. This includes sharing content from individuals, groups or organisations with overt political ties. To avoid promoting one business over another, this page usually does not publish or share content that promotes the services or products offered by a single business in isolation. For example naming several refill shops together in a single post or series of posts, or focusing on how a specific business has taken steps to cut its carbon emissions as part of a case study. All the content published on our page, whether by us or others, must follow our social media house rules. These can be found at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/social-media

🚶‍♀️ May is National Walking Month – but we know sometimes you need to get somewhere a bit quicker 🚲

Walking is a brilliant way to get around for short trips, but cycling is also a great, low-carbon option if you’re short on time or travelling a little further. Both help cut carbon emissions, save money on fuel and support your health and wellbeing.

This month, we’re encouraging everyone to choose walking and cycling for the journeys you make most often.

🌱 Basingstoke Green Week is back again this year – and it’s turning 14!

From next week Saturday (6 June) to Sunday 14 June, you’re invited to join communities across the borough for free events, workshops, performances and hands‑on activities that celebrate nature and show how small changes can make everyday life greener.

Expect eco‑friendly markets, repair cafés, wildlife activities, furniture upcycling, community gardens, and much more – all organised by local groups.

This , we’re marking National Walking Month by highlighting the benefits of leaving your car at home for shorter journeys and walking through local green spaces instead.

The photos in this post were all taken in Eastrop Park in Basingstoke and show just some of the wildlife you can spot on a simple walk. From harlequin ladybirds on nettles and blackbirds feeding on mahonia berries to cow parsley, flag iris, ragged robin, lady’s smock and buttercups, there’s plenty to see if you take the time to look.

Walking is a simple way to improve health and wellbeing, reduce traffic and enjoy nature close to home.

As it’s currently National Walking Month, leaving the car at home for shorter journeys can be a positive way to build more walking into everyday life, including routes through local parks.

🐝 We’re buzzing this for World Bee Day!

Celebrated each year on 20 May, World Bee Day aims to raise awareness of the vital role these little pollinators play in our ecosystems and food production. That includes helping to produce around a third of what we eat!

These important insects are under pressure, but there's plenty we can all do to help, like planting bee-friendly flowers and putting up a bug hotel in the garden.

To get more top tips for helping bees - and other wildlife - in your garden, book a free garden wildlife survey with the Basingstoke and Deane Green Team using the link in the comments. 👇

👢 Your boots were made for walking – and your wallet will thank you for it too.

Walking more often, especially for short everyday journeys like going to the shops or popping to see friends, is a simple way to save money on fuel and shrink your environmental impact.

To mark National Walking Month this May, consider swapping just one or two car trips a week - it's a great way to keep more money in your pocket, while also boosting your health and wellbeing and supporting nature.

The Baughurst Repair Cafe returns this Sunday.

Throwing things away often means you end up buying something else new… and, for most of us, what we buy and use already makes up the largest part of our carbon footprints

You could save money and cut your carbon if your item is repaired instead

So, if you’ve got a broken item in need of some love (and repair), bring it along from 10am to 1pm to Heath End Village Hall in Baughurst, RG26 5LU. You’ll need to book your item in by email at [email protected]
