ZVAMAIDA SCHOOL LIBRARY - MAKING GOOD PROGRESS

The planned Library at Zvamaida Primary School, is now progressing above foundation level (the foundations were laid in 2022).

Assisting us again in this project are Hope for African Communities, and this time The Rotary Club of Harari Dawn.
After all the initial work was done, including our due diligence, contractor appointed, and contracts signed, materials were delivered on 17th March to the school and work started straight away.
Progress has been good since this time, as the pictures show.
We are hopeful now that the roofing will be shortly completed and then finishing off the inside of the building will begin. Inside will have the main Library space and also consist of two smaller internal rooms for book storage and admin.

CLUB COMPLETE THEIR ANNUAL STROKE AWARENESS DAY

Once again, our club held their annual Stoke Awareness day at Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon Town Centre, with St John Ambulance in attendance to take the public’s blood pressure.
As always, we as a club believe it is an essential service that we provide to ensure early detection of potential problems. Knowing your blood pressure saves lives!
Whilst these days, more people are aware of their blood pressure because of the GP’s attention to this, and the public more likely to check their own blood pressure on purchased monitors, we still find those who have no idea of their blood pressure and need the service we offer. This year we found that the knowledge of knowing your blood pressure was even more widespread and were encouraged that it seemed that less people as a result were at risk. Of the 78 people that agreed to the checking, just four were given a referral to their GP for further testing. However, in one case it was an urgent referral as the readings taken were dangerously high in the case of a 30-year-old man.

Latrines and hand washing station nearly finished at Zvamaida Primary School

It has taken a long time, with so many false starts, hold ups and frustrations, but we are almost there!
The refurbishment of the existing ten latrines was the first stage of the program, as the deterioration of them since 2019 when we started the project, had made the situation urgent. These were done and re painted as well in in 2024. Since then, the frustrations became worse, but as always, we were determined to get the ten new latrines built and the hand washing station also done and completed.
Now, apart from a few things and the new latrines to be painted, we can say we are almost there!

REMEMBERENCE DAY PARTICIPATION

On Remembrance Day Sunday, a large Remembrance day service gathering of over a thousand people, was held in St Martin’s Square, Basildon Town Centre. Our club was represented at the service by club President Maz Uluhan and club PP and ADG Alison Beaumont with the presenting of a Wreath from our Club. Other club members also were in attendance.

On the 11th of the 11th of November our, clubs President Maz and his brother, Osman, also put on an event at their cafe in Felmores End, Pitsea, Basildon. The event was attended by residents housed in local sheltered accommodation, and local veterans who laid a wreath on behalf of our club to pay respect to the men and women who gave so much to protect our way of life and freedom.

END POLIO CAMPAIGN

The Friends of Northlands Park joined The Rotary Club of Basildon Concord in commemorating 'End Polio' day, by planting Crocus bulbs in Northlands Park,

End polio Day is an annual event, established by Rotary International, and it commemorates the birthday of Dr. Jonas Salk, who led the team that developed the first polio vaccine. Rotary led the campaign to fight Polio in 1979 in the Philippines, it was not until 1988 that many other organisations joined this world wide campaign, including the World health Organisation.
