Last Saturday was our club's 65th Birthday Lunch held at The Gun, Bowers Gifford and presided over by our President Ben. We had a great turnout which included District Governor Mark Williamson and wife Liz, Assistant Governor Mark Chabers and wife Stephanie, members from the Rotary Club of Billericay, ladies from Inner Wheel, and many Friends of Rotary. Our speaker for the occasion was Ryan Parker, a conservationist and adventurer who gave an exciting and energetic account of his travels around the world including swimming with sharks, sitting with Silverback Gorillas, and being capsized on the River Nile.
The other highlight of the event was the giving of our Unsung Hero Award. An annual award given to someone who has gone above and beyond to help others in the local community. This year the recipient was Karen Pullen, founder of The Craig Tyler Trust and we were delighted to be able to donate £500.00 to her charity. Karen's 22 year old son took his own life after suffering from severe depression following his father's death. Karen now works tirelessly to help others suffering from depression and mental health issues.
There was a collection for Essex Air Ambulance & The Alzheimer's Society on behalf of two club members, Bob Thomas and Janet Mudd, sadly recently passed to higher service.

Today we visited The Craig Tyler Trust at their cottages at Wat Tyler Country Park and caught up with the founder Karen and one of her volunteers Alison. Karen’s son Craig took his own life 7 years ago at the age of just 22 after battling mental health issues. Craig left his family and friends grieving immensely and Karen and her team want to make sure that they reach and help as many people as possible suffering from mental health problems, isolation and suicidal tendencies.
Pictured here is their delightful gift shop offering unique handmade items crafted during therapy sessions.
We shall be making a donation to this amazing charity at our Charter Lunch later in the year.
