Nathan Schloegl, a former member of the U.S. military and the Coast Guard, is now a NICU nurse working in the neonatal intensive care unit at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was inspired to become a nurse when his son was admitted to the NICU after he was born, and he relied on the nurse’s support during the difficult time.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is equipped with specialized tools designed to support premature and critically ill newborns as they grow stronger every day. From incubators that help regulate body temperature to ventilators that assist breathing, each piece of equipment plays a vital role in providing lifesaving care.

Understanding these devices can help parents feel more informed and empowered during their NICU journey. While the equipment may look overwhelming at first, every monitor, pump, and machine is there with one goal: supporting your baby's health, safety, and development.

Knowledge can ease fear, and knowing the purpose behind these tools can make the NICU experience a little less intimidating.

💜 Which NICU equipment surprised you the most when you first saw it? Share your experience in the comments below.

Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication that affects both mother and baby. it is characterized by high blood pressure and potential damage to organs like the liver and kidneys, often appearing after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Recognizing the signs early—such as swelling, severe headaches, changes in vision, and protein in the urine—can save lives.

Regular prenatal checkups, a healthy lifestyle, stress management, and following your doctor’s advice are key to prevention and management. remember, early detection protects both you and your baby. 💜💚

Did your baby ever hold onto your finger??

It’s one of the sweetest baby moments, and can hold this realization of “wow, that’s my baby!” .

That finger grasp is actually called a palmar grasp, and it’s one of your baby’s earliest reflexes.

It’s a sign of neurologic progression, and there’s actually some amazing benefits to letting your baby hold onto your finger if they’re in the NICU.

🔆 Less pain
🔆 Lower stress hormone response
🔆 More stable breathing and heart rates
🔆 Less time crying during baths when finger was held
🔆 Builds a foundation of trust that’s essential for all development!

Y’all, something as “simple” as letting your baby hold onto your finger during a bath or care time can actually support positive brain development.

YOU MATTER You’re truly important!!
