This week, we're celebrating the incredible world of insects... these tiny creatures play a huge role in keeping our planet healthy: from pollinating our flowers and crops, to supporting our ecosystems. Insects are essential to life on Earth.

Thank you to our visitors for submitting their images of insects around the reserve - they are loving this sunshine at present!

How you can get involved:
Plant pollinator-friendly flowers in your garden,
Leave log piles for beetles
Go on a minibeast hunt with family or friends (you can hire a kit in our visitors centre!)
Share your favourite insect photos using

Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not join the LWT Barton Area Group as they take a visit to RSPB St Aidens, a former open cast coal mines which is now a magnificent RSPB wetland reserve and has a good population of breeding Black Necked Grebes this Saturday (20th) June. Our fabulous reserve warden, Simon, will be leading this trip.

As usual, the group will be meeting at Ness End Farm at 9am on Saturday and will return to Far Ings around between 5-6pm.

Please bring a packed lunch.

This event is FREE - however there is a parking charge for non-RSPB members.

Join members of the Barton Area Group for a full day field trip to RSPB's St Aidans Nature Reserve near Leeds.

Another fantastic entry by one of our regulars showing the brutality of nature with this shot of a stoat with a rat.

Stoats are well known for their lightning-fast reflexes and boundless energy - they are among the UK's most impressive hunters. And, while it may seem harsh, predation is a vital part of a healthy ecosystem, helping to maintain balance between predator and prey.

Often heard but rarely seen, this wonderful shot shows the Cetti's Warbler in full song!

Cetti's Warblers have gone from rarity to success story in the UK. Their numbers have risen dramatically in recent decades, and their explosive song is now a familiar sound in many wetlands.

This week is volunteers week!

Our nature reserve simply wouldn't be what it is without our incredible volunteers.

From caring for habitats and maintaining trails to welcoming visitors and supporting conservation projects, their dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work make a real difference every single day.

We are so grateful for the time, energy, and passion they give to helping protect this special place for wildlife and people alike. Their commitment helps ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy and connect with nature here.

A polite notice:

Far Ings Visitor Centre will be shut for the morning of Friday 4th June.

The Bearded Birders guided walk will still go ahead; please meet the group at the picnic area by the car park.

The centre will reopen for dinner time on Friday.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused!

It's that time again!

Join The Bearded Birders for their monthly wellbeing walk around the reserve this Friday (5th)!

Come and hear the bitterns booming and the cuckoos calling and learn lots of tips and tricks on everything nature with the wonderful Gaz and Alan.

Suitable for everyone - from experts to beginners, come and share the love of nature and nerd out with great company.

The walk (and parking!) is FREE! Simply meet us at the Visitor Centre Picnic Area from 10:00am this Friday morning and head out with the group from 10:30am.

Unfortunately the Centre will be shut for the morning but will be open again for refreshments from dinner time.
