Here are a few simple ways you can help a hedgehog, these are just off the top of my head but hopefully it will give you an idea of the small things you can do to help our beloved hoggies 🦔🥰
1. Support feeding, in the evenings put out dry chicken cat food and fresh water (no milk or fish products) pictured are some ideas for feeding stations : you could also put up a wildlife camera for hours of entertainment 🦔
2. Hedgehog highway, a hole 13x13cm in your fence is ideal. Hedgehogs forage for food - and they can roam 1-2 miles in 1 evening, if everyone put in a highway it would make it much easier for hogs to find food and also ohlala love 🥰
3. A wildlife pond would help many creatures, not just hedgehogs - when I put my small one in it took me an afternoon, with in 1/2 hour of it being complete a honey bee stopped and refuelled - to me that was worth every second of making it, I now have an array of wildlife that visit it and it gives me hours of enjoyment ❤️ ps don’t forget the sloping shelf/shallower end for any mischievous visitors that might find them selfs dropping in the pond.
4. Check for hazards : netting is one of the biggest problems - hedgehogs get caught up in it and can suffer horrific injuries - just lift the netting a couple of foot off the ground. Simple 😊 think about alternate pest control, traps and poisons don’t just kill the intended targets, there are alternative methods out there.
5. I love to see my garden all tidy and lawn cut, however I also have a couple of areas out of the way or hidden that are left messy, stacks of wood, piles of leaves the compost heap are all perfect! Do not disturb these areas during the breeding & hibernation period! You could also get a hibernation box for your garden and you never know, you may even get a mama have babies - what a joy to watch that would be 🥰
6. If you see a hedgehog that appears to be in distress - wobbly, trapped, injured, flies around it or out in the day then please contact your nearest rescue for advice.
