It's a tragedy that the bishops fail to recognise the pain – and to hear the pleas – of terminally ill people who are subject to extreme suffering that even the very best palliative care cannot relieve.
Of course, every religious person has the right to oppose assisted dying and not choose it for themselves, but we don't think its right that these religious views on death and suffering, should be imposed on terminally ill people who do wish for an assisted death.
It's important to understand that if the Senedd rejects the Legislative Consent Motion, assisted dying will still become legal in Wales, with the law continued to be designed by Westminster. This would deny the Welsh Government the powers it needs to design the law around the Welsh people.
Senior Catholic clergy in Wales have spoken against possible new assisted su***de laws.
