🐺✨ MEET THE TEAM: AKELA EDITION! ✨🐺

It's time to get to know the face behind the famous Cub Scout call... say hello to Vicki, better known around 1st Barry as Akela! 🌟

⏳ How long have you been volunteering with Scouts?
"I've been volunteering with 1st Barry Sea Scout Group for a year."

🌍 What do you do when you're not leading Cub adventures?
"I'm a Geography teacher in a secondary school."
So if you're ever lost on a hike, Akela probably knows exactly where you are. 🧭😂

🌅 Morning person or night owl?
"Morning person!"
The early bird catches the... badges? 🏅

☕ Coffee or tea?
"Lots and lots of cups of tea please!"
We're starting to think tea might actually be her superpower. 🫖💪

🍍 Pineapple on pizza: yes or no?
"Anything on a pizza is delicious!"
I think that's 3 for Pineapple so far....

📺 Favourite childhood TV programme/cartoon?
"Scooby-Doo!"
Which explains her enthusiasm for mysteries, adventures, and travelling with a quirky gang! 🐕🔍

🌟 Could You Help More Young People Experience Scouting? 🌟
Our Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts love the adventures, skills and friendships they enjoy each week at 1st Barry Sea Scout Group. But to keep offering these opportunities, and to welcome more young people, we need more adult volunteers.
We know life is busy, so we're looking for flexible volunteers who can help in a way that works for them, whether that's regularly, occasionally or behind the scenes.
You don't need previous Scouting experience, just a willingness to help make a difference.

🌟 Join the Trustee Board at 1st Barry Scout Group 🌟

Are you looking for a rewarding way to support young people in your local community?

1st Barry Scout Group is seeking a Co-opted Trustee Board Member to join our Board of Trustees. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of Scouting in 1st Barry and make a real difference to the lives of local young people.

We're particularly interested in people who can bring:

✅ Experience of serving on a committee, trustee board, governing body, or as a board-level director
✅ Confidence in contributing to decisions, planning, and strategic thinking
✅ An understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing young people and families today
✅ A willingness to bring fresh ideas and constructively challenge "the way we've always done it"
✅ The ability to contribute positively in meetings and online discussions
✅ Welsh language skills are welcomed and valued

As a Trustee Board Member, you'll help ensure our Scout Group remains strong, sustainable, and able to provide amazing opportunities for young people in 1st Barry.

You don't need previous Scouting experience. We are looking for people with different perspectives, professional expertise, and a passion for helping young people thrive.

🌟 MEET THE TEAM 🌟

It's time for another Meet the Team feature, and this week we're putting our Scout Team Leader, Andy, in the hot seat! 🎤😊

👋 How long have you been a volunteer in Scouts?
"I've volunteered with 1st Barry for nearly five years, starting by helping to set up our Squirrel Drey before taking on the role of Troop Team Leader just over two years ago. I've been involved in Scouts in various guises since I was a Beaver myself, and I can even remember celebrating five years of Beavers!"

💼 What do you do for a living?

"I run an accountancy firm supporting charities and not-for-profit organisations across the UK and beyond. It's a role that has given me the opportunity to travel the world!"

🌍 Numbers by day, adventures by night!

☀️ Morning person or night owl?

"Definitely a morning person... but only after a cup of coffee. Black, no sugar please!"

☕ Coffee or tea?

Coffee.

🍍 Pineapple on pizza: Yes or No?

"Always got to have pineapple!"

"Definitely Thunderbirds, and it had to be the original puppet version!"

💜 A Heartfelt Thank You to the Family of Derek Heaton 💜

As a Scout Group, we are privileged to play a small part in the lives of so many young people. Every now and then, we are reminded that the memories made through Scouting stay with people for a lifetime.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the family of Derek Heaton for their incredibly generous donation made in memory of a beloved husband and father.

Reading Derek's memories of 1st Barry Scouts, it is clear just how much Scouting meant to him. He fondly recalled joining the group as a young Cub, the friendships he made, adventures in Porthkerry Park, camps at Cym-Yoy, hikes in the Black Mountains, and the pride he felt progressing through Scouts. His story paints a wonderful picture of a childhood filled with friendship, adventure, laughter and opportunities that stayed with him throughout his life.

It is therefore especially meaningful that, through the generosity of his family, we have been able to purchase new camping equipment for today's young people.

The equipment will help future generations of 1st Barry experience their own adventures, sleep under canvas, learn new skills, build confidence and create memories that, like Derek's, will last a lifetime.

We hope Derek's family can take comfort in knowing that his love of Scouting will continue to inspire young people for many years to come.

On behalf of everyone at 1st Barry Sea Scout Group, thank you for your kindness, generosity and support.

💜 Derek's story is a wonderful reminder that Scouting memories never fade, and thanks to his family's gift, new memories will continue to be made for generations to come.
