Universities of Wales Air Squadron Develop personal skills. This is the official page for the Universities of Wales Air Squadron (UWAS).

Giving university students from a range of varied backgrounds an insight into what it's like to serve within the Royal Air Force through adventurous training, flying, sporting activities and leadership training. We are part of 6 Flying Training School (FTS) within No 22 Group of the Royal Air Force. Our primary aim is to give students from Welsh Universities the opportunity to gain insight into what it's like serve both within the regular RAF and its reserve forces. Students have the opportunity to undergo flying training, adventurous training, sport, field exercises, leadership training and even compete for a commission in the RAF reserves while still at university. On top of this, students also receive some pay for their activities. We feel that our offer is unmatched by any other university society. 👀Do you want your next year to be as good as ours?👀

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿In the last year, students from UWAS have had the opportunity to take part in APSE’s and adventure training expeditions across the UK and abroad.

These have included Skiing in France, Hiking in Norway and Iceland, Canoeing in the UK and Sweden, APSE’s ( Air Power Study Exercises ) in Poland, Normandy and Jersey, the International Forum for Peace in Sicily, AT in the Brecon Beacons, station visits across the UK and SO MUCH MORE!

✈️But that’s not all. Students have also been racking up their flying hours. Whether that’s going up for an Air Experience Flight or progressing through the flying syllabus to get that first solo!✈️

🛶🇸🇪EX. HÅRKAN WAYS🇸🇪🛶

Last week 7 UWAS students joined 10 students in Sweden to canoe 60km over 5 days down the River Hårken.

Students were required to carry their whole week’s worth of equipment with them each day. Fishing for food and pitching up riverside each night.

Overall a fantastic week had by all!

🇮🇸 Ex. OBSIDIAN TRAVERSE 🇮🇸

Last week 12 UWAS students were joined by 6 students in a 5 day hiking expedition across the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails in Iceland. The 80km route consisted of multiple river crossings, steep descents and technical climbs.

The week allowed all students to develop an array of mountaineering skills. For some it was their first time camping and for others it was an opportunity to develop previous skills in navigation and communication.

A special thanks is needed for the for helping make this expedition possible!

Overall a fantastic week spent well by all!

🛶Ex PaddleSport One🛶

Earlier in July, 8 students from UWAS and Bristol University Air Sqn 🐗 traveled to the river Wye to take part in a 2 day canoeing expedition.

This fantastic opportunity allowed complete beginners to experienced students to learn a new skill and take on the river’s rapids!
