🏍️ Happy Dave Day! 🏍️

As thousands of bikers gather to celebrate Dave Day, we're taking a look back at Barrow's own motorcycling history through the Sankey Archives.

📸 Image 1 (1925) – Furness Motor Sporting Club. First Reliability Trials. A group of motorcyclists and two cars are lined up in front of the Hotel Imperial in Barrow.

📸 Image 2 (1924) – Motor trials at Walney, view looking west across Biggar Bank. Crowds gathered around the start line as a rider gets a push start.

📸 Image 3 – A family out for a ride in an early motorcycle and sidecar combination, complete with carbide lamp and windmill mounted on the front.

📸 Image 4 (1920s) – Simpson's garage on Duke Street, where motorcycles and motorcars shared the showroom floor.

📸 Image 5 – (1926) Barrow Motor Club Gymkhana. A group of motorcyclists throw up dust and smoke as they play 'Motorcycle Football'

📸 Image 6 (Early 20th Century) – Matchless motorcycle EO 523 at the Electric Tram Depot. Early 20th Century Man posing on Matchless EO523 in front of trams 24 and 25.

📸 Image 7 (1920s) – Furness Motor Sporting Club. Second Reliability Trials. A motorcycle and sidecar are rounding a bend on an unmetalled road. A second motorcycle is a short distance behind.

As Dave Day brings riders together once again, these photographs offer a glimpse into the town's rich motoring past 🏍️✨

💬 Join us for an Artist Talk with Felicity Hammond, the artist behind our current exhibition, REACTOR ☢️

👀 Discover the ideas behind the exhibition and hear directly from the artist about how she develops her ambitious work and installations.

Hammond is an award-winning artist whose installations explore the impact of emerging technologies, digital systems, industry and power. Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including The Photographers’ Gallery (London), C/O Berlin and Fotomuseum Winterthur, and she is the recipient of a Lumen Art Prize and the Ampersand/Photoworks Fellowship.

REACTOR marks Hammond's return to Barrow-in-Furness following her 2017 Signal commission, 'In Defence of Industry'. The new multimedia installation explores the possibilities and implications of autonomous submarines, drawing on Barrow's unique relationship with submarine production.
