100 installations is a fantastic achievement for the The Schools' Energy Co-operative...

Whilst the summer holidays are in full swing we're keeping an eye on our solar arrays ☀️ including on Bridport Leisure Centre, which was our 100th installation.

A total of 75 kWp spread over 2 buildings, it generated 20% above expected output in July, and that bonus will ultimately be channelled back into our members schools and sites. Although really our goal is to stop summers from being this extreme...

It has been a heavy week for nature news, but we have a small but mighty success story to share from a district heating co-operative in Surrey:

Springbok Co-op runs a wood chip biomass district heating system near Alfold, Surrey. Reducing fossil fuel use has been the central goal but not the only one: alongside it they have been bringing nearby woodland back into careful management, to supply a sustainable source of wood and to increase the woodland's biodiversity.

They particularly wanted to create habitat for the wood white butterfly, an endangered GB red-listed species, whose numbers have dropped by more than 80% since the 1970s.

Annual transect surveys in Park Copse recorded 8 wood whites in total across the first 4 years. 2025 saw 21 recordings, and 2026 saw that more than double to 45. That’s one species: other bird, insect and plant surveys show growth and diversity across the board.

Proof that a small group can make a meaningful difference 🦋 💚

These are the kinds of projects that community energy groups have used their benefit funds to support for schools, community centres and other local spaces.

A week like this reminds us that these projects aren't a nice-to-have, they are essential. The figure below is taken from our annual report (just released on our website) and covers the impact of the 35 Energy4All co-ops, so think what a difference the whole community energy sector is making.

What a scorcher this week has been. As well as the implications for agriculture, wildlife, rivers etc. even solar panels start to lose some efficiency at temperatures this high - not a week to celebrate from any angle!

On a more hopeful note, Community Energy England are currently running their Up the Energy campaign, raising awareness of community energy and how it can help tackle the climate crisis in a way that gives people real power. If you haven't seen it yet check out their video:
